Two people in a dimly lit room, one in a black outfit with short dark hair, and the other dressed in a black-and-white striped suit, with pale skin and disheveled hair, standing side by side.

This is a first for me. I’ve never revisited a character, ever.

In a cinematic landscape increasingly dominated by sequels, reboots, and reimaginings, Winona Ryder’s return as Lydia Deetz in the long-awaited sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice marks a significant milestone. As the iconic actress delves back into the eerie world of the Deetz family and the mischievous ghost Beetlejuice, she offers insights into the challenges and joys of reprising a character decades later.

For Ryder, who has graced the screens for over four decades, the return to Lydia Deetz is uncharted territory. Despite a prolific career spanning various genres and roles, revisiting a character she portrayed in the late 1980s presents a unique set of challenges. However, in a recent interview with Empire Magazine, Ryder expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity, labeling it as “one of the most special experiences” of her career.

“You know, you grow up, and things change. Life happens. I struggle to find the words. It’s just one of the most special experiences that I’ve ever had. The fact that we’re coming back to it, it’s… It’s beyond.”

Reflecting on the evolution of Lydia’s character, Ryder highlights the delicate balance between preserving the essence of the original portrayal while allowing room for growth and change. Lydia, now navigating adulthood with her own television show, “Ghost House With Lydia Deetz,” is a testament to her enduring “strange and unusual” nature introduced in the first film. Ryder acknowledges the complexity of reimagining Lydia for a new era while ensuring she remains recognizable to fans of the beloved cult classic.

Person in black outfit and dark hair sits in a room with an old television displaying "BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE" on the screen.

“I went through so many stages of, ‘Who is she now?'” Ryder confesses, emphasizing her commitment to honoring Lydia’s core identity while embracing the passage of time. The challenge lies in infusing the character with newfound depth and complexity without losing the spark that made her iconic.

“I went through so many stages of, ‘Who is she now?’, but I always wanted to have it be Lydia. She can’t lose who she was. She can’t be the same person, she can’t be just completely deadpan, she has to have evolved, but she also has to have kept that thing she had when we first met her. So that was the big challenge for me.”

One pivotal aspect of the sequel’s anticipation is the return of Michael Keaton as the irreverent Beetlejuice and the introduction of Jenna Ortega in a new role, promising a blend of nostalgia and fresh energy. Fans eagerly await the ghoulish reunion, fueled by decades of fond memories and the promise of new adventures in the afterlife.

As the release date of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice draws nearer, anticipation mounts for the revival of a beloved tale intertwined with the evolution of its characters. For Winona Ryder, stepping back into Lydia Deetz’s shoes is not only a professional milestone but a deeply personal journey, a testament to the enduring magic of cinema and the timeless allure of the strange and unusual.
