    The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt Remastered

    CD Projekt Red did not simply recompile an old build for Nintendo’s new hardware. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered arrives natively on Switch 2 on September 29, 2026, with reworked combat, rebuilt Roach handling, an expanded photo mode, and both expansions included.

    When and How to Get The Witcher 3 Remastered on Switch 2

    The launch is simultaneous across platforms. Remastered lands the same day on PS5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC through Steam, GOG, the Epic Games Store, and, for the first time, Battle.net under a new partnership between CD Projekt Red and Blizzard. Unlike several high-profile Nintendo Switch 2 games, The Witcher 3 Switch 2 release is a native build rather than a cloud stream.

    Pre-orders opened on the eShop after the Gamescom Opening Night Live reveal, where the remaster was announced alongside Songs of the Past, a third expansion due in 2027.

    Free Upgrade Path for Existing Switch Owners

    Anyone who owns The Witcher 3 on the original Switch can claim the Switch 2 edition at no cost, and that covers physical copies as well as digital ones. Two details matter for anyone planning storage space and a save file. The Switch 2 edition installs as a separate download with its own icon on the Home menu, so it does not patch over the original Switch installation, and it needs roughly 43.4 GB.

    Existing saves carry across. CD Projekt Red confirmed in early September that save files from the original Switch version transfer to Remastered, so a long-running playthrough does not have to restart. On a physical Switch 2 release, the studio has said only that “the news will come when the time is right.”

    How the Switch 2 Port Performs

    Targets came from a REDstreams broadcast during Gamescom rather than from marketing copy, which makes them unusually specific for a pre-launch port. Both modes aim at the same frame-rate window, with resolution doing the compromising.

    Mode Resolution target Frame rate target Notes
    Docked 1080p 30 to 40 fps Closer to 40 fps on 120Hz displays
    Handheld 720p 30 to 40 fps VRR enabled on the built-in screen
    Install size Around 43.4 GB Separate download Does not overwrite the Switch 1 build
    Output HDR supported Up to 120Hz Compatible displays only

    Docked and Handheld Resolution and Frame Rate

    Docked play targets 1080p, and the 40 fps ceiling is realistic only on a television that accepts a 120Hz signal. Handheld drops to 720p, which has drawn the loudest criticism from players who expected more from the hardware in 2026. The counterargument is the frame-rate floor: holding 30 to 40 fps in a dense open world on a portable is a harder problem than pixel count suggests.

    HDR, VRR and the Mouse and Gyro Control Schemes

    Variable refresh rate is the quiet headline. In handheld mode, VRR smooths the gap between 30 and 40 fps rather than locking the game to the lower number, which is what makes a variable target acceptable instead of annoying. HDR output is supported, and refresh rates run up to 120Hz on compatible screens.

    Control support is where the port earns the word native. Mouse mode can be set to always-on or to dynamic, activating automatically when a Joy-Con is placed on a flat surface. Gyro aiming ships with sliders for sensitivity, camera stabilization, and axis inversion; touchscreen input is supported, and a dual-grip mode is included alongside standard Pro Controller play. Mods work too, with exceptions tied to Nintendo’s guidelines and technical limits such as the 8K texture pack.

    What’s Actually New in This Remaster

    The 2022 next-gen patch improved how the game looked. This one goes after how it feels across a sixty-hour replay, which is a different and harder target. The headline additions:

    • Reworked combat targeting and faster gap-closing movement between enemies;

    • An adaptive combat camera that tightens for duels and pulls back for crowds;

    • Rebuilt Roach handling with sharper turning and fewer collision oddities;

    • A redesigned skill tree with interlocking branches and more flexible progression;

    • Armor transmogrification, new finisher animations and an expanded photo mode;

    • Reworked looting, refined quest tracking, a modernized tutorial and new accessibility options.

    Combat, Movement and Monster AI Upgrades

    Geralt’s attack animations were redone so transitions between targets read more smoothly, and the reveal trailer showed a finisher executed with the Aard sign. Monster behavior changed alongside him: the same footage showed a griffin blocking an attack and countering, which is a different encounter design from the original’s swing-and-roll rhythm.

    Movement and traversal were refined more broadly, and Witcher Signs carry new visual effects. Roach received another handling overhaul on top of the 2022 pass, with more responsive turning and clearer speed control. These are the changes aimed at the hours between the famous quests, and they matter more on a handheld than on a television, because short sessions expose clumsy movement faster than long ones do.

    Photo Mode, Transmogrification and New Finishers

    Transmogrification is the request players have made for a decade: display one armor set while keeping another set’s stats, so a build no longer dictates how Geralt looks. Photo mode, first added in 2022, gains poses, camera controls, frames, filters, and additional character models. The new execution animations are deliberately more violent than the originals, and the skill tree rework lets advanced perks open earlier instead of gating them behind a quota of basic ones.

    Both Expansions Included at No Extra Cost

    Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine ship inside Remastered, and both received the same round of upgrades rather than being left on the old build. That distinction matters, since a remaster that improved only the base game would leave two of the strongest chapters looking dated by comparison.

    CD Projekt Red went further at Gamescom by making both expansions free immediately for everyone who already owned the base game, ahead of the remaster’s release. Blood and Wine’s Toussaint is the most color-saturated region in the game, so the foliage shading rework and new lighting model land hardest there. For anyone building a shortlist of the best Nintendo Switch games to carry into the new hardware, a hundred-hour RPG with both expansions attached is a strong argument on value alone.

    What This Means Looking Ahead to Songs of the Past

    Songs of the Past arrives in 2027 as a paid third expansion, built with Fool’s Theory, a studio staffed by veterans of the original game. It takes Geralt to Letten, a rural realm whose pastoral surface hides something older, with new monsters and warped tree-like creatures guarding it. Buying it on Battle.net unlocks a Geralt-inspired skin in Diablo 4.

    The sequencing explains the remaster. A new expansion running on an eleven-year-old build would have looked its age, so the technical work had to come first. This is also the last major Geralt story before The Witcher IV, which stars Ciri, runs on Unreal Engine 5 and targets 2028. Anyone tracking Nintendo Switch 2 news should expect Songs of the Past on Switch 2 as well, given the port is native rather than streamed, and it would join the list of new Nintendo Switch games worth holding storage space for.

    One aside for the handheld crowd. Between long RPG sessions, many players fill short gaps with quick-round mobile titles, and this Aviator Game guide covers how multiplier timing and cash-out thresholds work in that format, which is a very different kind of risk management from choosing a Witcher build.

    FAQ

    Is The Witcher 3 Remastered free on Switch 2 if I already own it?

    Yes. Owners of The Witcher 3 Switch release can claim the Switch 2 edition at no cost, and CD Projekt Red confirmed that physical Switch copies qualify as well as digital ones. The upgrade installs as its own download rather than patching the existing game, and saves transfer across.

    What resolution and frame rate does the Switch 2 version run at?

    Docked play targets 1080p at 30 to 40 fps, with the upper end more achievable on a 120Hz television. Handheld targets 720p at the same 30 to 40 fps with variable refresh rate enabled. HDR output is supported on compatible displays.

    Are Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine included?

    Both expansions are included in Remastered at no extra cost, and both were upgraded rather than carried over untouched. Owners of the base game on any platform also received them free from the Gamescom announcement onward, before the remaster itself shipped.

    When is the Songs of the Past expansion coming out?

    In 2027, with no firmer date announced. It is a paid expansion set in the new realm of Letten, developed in partnership with Fool’s Theory. It is the final Geralt-led story before The Witcher IV, which targets 2028 with Ciri as the playable character.
