You Win or You Die: Davos Seaworth

Ser Davos Seaworth is introduced in Season 2 of Game of Thrones, as essentially the right hand man of Stannis Bartheon. Throughout his time with Stannis, Davos gets thrown in a jail cell, leads the Battle of Blackwater Bay, and ultimately becomes Stannis’ Hand. However, after Stannis is killed, Davos is left at Castle Black, and becomes one of the leading people that convince Melissandre to resurrect Jon after Jon is the victim of a vicious mutiny. After Jon defeats the Bolton Army and becomes King in the North, it’s Davos who acts as his Hand and right hand man, ultimately accompanying Jon to Dragonstone and King’s Landing.

Davos makes it very clear early on that he’s not much a fighter. The former smuggler is best at operating ships and giving orders, but when it comes to sword fighting, Davos is not very skilled. It also doesn’t help that he’s missing half of his right hand, courtesy of Stannis. Like Brienne of Tarth, Davos is very noble, and he has way too much belief in Jon Snow as the rightful King. And like Brienne of Tarth, I can very easily see Davos sacrificing himself for Jon, or even Daenerys, or possibly…Gendry Baratheon. Let’s face it, Game of Thrones is coming to an end, and there’s no way a show like this is going to end with everyone alive and living happily ever after; people are going to die, people we love are going to die, it’ll be heartbreaking, and Davos is someone a lot of people love.

HOWEVER, is killing Davos a necessity? I don’t believe so. There’s other characters that are more beloved by fans that could be killed off. For example, Sansa, Bran, Jon, Daenerys, Jaime, or Brienne. Why kill a character that could be useful in the end, when you don’t have to? Granted, we are talking about Game of Thrones here, but still; I just don’t think it makes much sense to kill Davos. I could easily see Davos sticking around until the end, and ultimately serving on the small council of whoever ends up on the Iron Throne, or returning home to his family, and getting that happy ending I talked about earlier.

While killing Davos would easily be one of the more heart-wrenching deaths, I don’t think it’s a death that necessarily needs to happen. While it would be easy to have Davos die since he can’t really handle a sword that well, his military prowess would be essentially in overtaking Cersei and King’s Landing, should the Northern Army defeat the Night King. And I would be willing to guarantee that if Davos survives the battle against the Army of the Dead, that he will survive the finale; I don’t see him dying in King’s Landing. That’s why I’m giving Davos Seworth a 90% chance to survive the show.
