You Win or You Die: Gendry Baratheon

Ah, Gendry. The poor guy has been through so much already, even though he’s only appeared in 5 season. We’re first introduced to the Baratheon bastard in season 1, as he’s working as a smith in King’s Landing and Ned Stark comes to see if he’s actually Robert’s son. Then our pal Gendry gets kidnapped by the Brotherhood Without Banners, and sold to Melissandre, where he gets leeches put on him. So yeah, Gendry’s had a rough time on the show; however, he’s the last Baratheon left, and if the showrunners want to really end the show with a nice little bow, they would keep at least one person from most of the noble houses (Lannister, Targaryen, Stark, Tully, Arryn, Tyrell, Martell, Greyjoy and Baratheon) alive. It also helps Gendry’s cause that he uses a warhammer just like his father used to, and he’s pretty good at it (but how crazy would it be if Gendry died by Wight Boar, like Robert died by a wild boar, just saying). Ultimately, I don’t think Gendry will die in season 8, but that doesn’t mean he’s completely safe either.

Why Gendry will survive season 8: Well, like I’ve said he’s the last Baratheon, and I think the writers will want to keep a Baratheon alive. He’s also very good at wielding a hammer, as we’ve seen in earlier seasons. Gendry is also faster than the speed of light evidently, as he was able to get from the middle of nowhere to Eastwatch in only a few minutes in season 7 (okay, sorry I had to). But really, Gendry is one of they younger characters that really has a lot of potential to rule some day; after all, he IS the rightful heir to the throne after Robert. I also have a nice little theory about Gendry and another character that would, obviously, require Gendry to live. I’m willing to bet a good amount of money that Gendry will end up marrying either Arya or Sansa Stark, whichever survives, and ruling the North with her at his side. Happy endings, right? But what if Gendry doesn’t make it?

Why Gendry won’t survive season 8: The Night King is coming, and he has a dragon, and a bigass army of wights and White Walkers. Gendry is great with a hammer, but unless that hammer is laced with Valyrian steel, which it’s not, it’s not going to hold off the Army of the Dead for long. And let’s say that Gendry does survive the Army of the Dead, we all know that Cersei would love few things more than to be responsible for the extinction of the Baratheon House. It also doesn’t help that Gendry was completely absent from the show for 2 seasons, and just popped up last season like he’s been there all along. He’s loved, yeah, but is he adored like other characters? No way. I could easily think of at least 10-15 deaths would get the viewers more worked up than Gendry’s, which means he’s easily expendable. Season 6 was one of the best Thrones seasons yet, and Gendry wasn’t there for one episode, I’m just saying…don’t get too attached. Now, am I sitting here saying Gendry will get killed off screen? Absolutely not. If Gendry dies, they’ll show it on the screen, and I’m sure it’ll be pretty sad. As far as sacrificing himself for someone, really the only possible person would be Arya. They have a bond, and it would be a hard, hard death for the youngest Stark left.

So, what’s gonna happen to Gendry: While both arguments have pretty solid ground, I just can’t see Gendry dying. If he wasn’t meant to finish the show alive, I doubt they would’ve taken the time in season 7 to bring him back. Gendry’s fate has always been tied to Arya, and ultimately, I think he and Arya will rule the North. That’s why I’m giving ole Gendry Baratheon a 75% chance to survive.
