For young Sheldon Cooper, being a once-in-a-generation mind capable of advanced mathematics and science isn’t always helpful in East Texas. And while the vulnerable, gifted and somewhat naïve Sheldon deals with the world, his very normal family must find a way to deal with him. His father struggles as a high school football coach and father to a boy he doesn’t understand. Sheldon’s mother fiercely protects her son who just doesn’t fit in. Sheldon’s older brother does the best he can in high school, but his younger brother is already in college. Sheldon’s twin sister remains the one person who can reliably tell Sheldon the truth. And his beloved Meemaw, his Texas grandmother who supports him and his gifts. For over a decade, Big Bang Theory audiences came to know the iconic, eccentric and extraordinary Sheldon Cooper. Now they join him as he embarks on his innocent, awkward journey toward the man he will become.

Video Quality
Young Sheldon: The Complete Fifth Season arrives on Blu-Ray courtesy of Warner Archive with an impeccable AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 1.78:1. This transfer reveals a lot of unique detail within the costumes and production design. The aesthetic of the series remains luminous with a lovely, warm color palette revealing vibrant colors within the period production design. Black levels are quite deep, giving way to a significant amount of detail in shadowy scenes. The whites of the show are radiant, but do not fall victim to any blooming in this presentation. Skin tones appear natural throughout the season, and compression artifacts and other such digital anomalies do not pop up as a hindrance. The Blu-Ray presentation improves upon the inconsistent broadcast feed.
Audio Quality
This Blu-Ray comes with a pleasant DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio track that captures the sounds of this world with ease. There is not too much in the way of action on this show, but the sounds of the environment engage the surround speakers in a really notable way. Ambient sounds are precisely placed in the rear channels. Dialogue is the primary feature of the show, and it always comes through crisp and clear without being overshadowed by any competing sounds. The music on the show complements the thematic moments without being too showy, often filling the room during transitional moments. The voiceover from Jim Parsons comes through with a natural weight within the mix. The audio track captures this soundscape with ease as fans are given a terrific presentation. There are optional English subtitles provided.
Special Features
- Time Flies When You’re Having Fun – Young Sheldon at 100: An eight-minute featurette in which the cast and creative reminisce over the last five years, the changes in the characters and performers, how the story has evolved with these changes and more. This is a sweet little piece which shows how the performers are like a real family.
Final Thoughts
The fifth season of Young Sheldon once again finds the show evolving while maintaining all the elements that make it one of the most satisfying family comedies on television. Iain Armitage is growing up and growing into new facets of Sheldon, and the show is handling this quite well. Every season tends to give the excellent supporting cast more depth, and it usually pays off in spades. I’ve said it before, but anyone holding a weird mark against this show due to its relation to The Big Bang Theory is depriving themselves of a heartwarming sitcom that is very much its own distinct show. Warner Archive continues to deliver a wonderful A/V presentation and brief supplemental featurette. If you are a fan of the show, you will love having it at the ready in great quality. Dillon is most comfortable sitting around in a theatre all day watching both big budget and independent movies.
