31 Days of Horror: ‘HALLOWEEN’ Review

1978 Halloween

John Carpenter’s Halloween is one of the most iconic horror films ever created, and given that is has been forty-two years. It still holds up as one of the best films in the horror genre, even in today’s standard. This reason alone should prove how skilled John Carpenter is as a director, writer, and composer.

Halloween breaks most of the barriers for female protagonists, much like Ridley Scott’s 1979 ‘Alien’ with Ripley. One of the reasons why Halloween is ahead of its time is because of the contrast between the characters. Annie and Lynda are more relaxed and live in the now.

Meanwhile, we see Laurie as a little more aware of her surroundings than Annie and Lynda. Laurie is also more disciplined, and because of that, she makes smart decisions that keep her alive throughout the movie.

Michael Myers is a one-dimensional character, which can be perceived as a bad thing. Still, with this movie and 2018’s Halloween, Michael Myers as a legend is what makes Michael Myers a badass character. That and him doing the unspeakable, killing dogs.

One main rule that I find with most people is that the dog should always survive, but with Michael, when he does kill the dog, it just shows that he has no remorse not only for human life but any life for that matter.

The films in the seventies had some of the best movies for Horror fans from Jaws, The Exorcist, Alien, and so much more, but when it came to slashers, Halloween is number one! It is above the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Black Christmas, and the hills have eyes.

Halloween is incredible, but the other Halloween movies were straight-up garbage (which I love). Until we got the 2018 Halloween directed by David Gordon Green, and many can argue why it is better than the original.
