31 Days of Horror: ‘Lovecraft Country’ Review

Courtney B Vance as George Freeman, Johnathan Majors as Atticus, and Jurnee Smollett as Leti

Lovecraft Country is quickly becoming one of the best series todate. Destroying one of the most annoying basic tropes of any horror film, which is tripping on air. That moment when Jurnee Smollett’s character was running away from the monsters (Shoggoths) and not tripping or looking back; everyone fell in love with Lovecraft Country.

But that is not the only reason why the show is so good. The chemistry between Leti and Atticus is beautiful, the relationship between Atticus and Montrose is fascinating on so many levels. Ruby’s storyline is intriguing , fun, sexy and weird all at the same time; I can not wait to see how story concludes, if it concludes in the season.

One of my favorite episodes from Lovecraft Country so far was the sixth episode, Meet Me in Daegu. Jamie Chung is a loveable character, but what she did is unforgettable, she should have told Atticus the truth and maybe he would have stayed with her. Yes, I ship Atticus and Ji-Ah.

Jamie Chung as Ji-Ah and Johnathon Majors as Atticus

Lovecraft Country as so many gendered in the one show, it will be hard not to recommend this to an film or TV fan. If you are into romance they have a ton of that, and it is not cringe romance like in most films or television. If you are into action there are a lot of great action moments. If you are into mystery or Horror then you will love this show. But, especially horror that latest episode, Jig-a-Bobo I guarantee you that you will freak out!

Lovecraft Country is brilliant for many different reasons. Still, the main reason I think Lovecraft Country is brilliant is how they use Horror, mystery, romance to talk about racism not only for blacks, but they touch on it with Asian culture as well. If we do get more seasons, I hope they can expand on this with other cultures too.

If you have HBO Max and you have not started Lovecraft Country, you definitely should; it is fun, addicting but most importantly, it’s is a story that everyone should watch and pay attention to.

The entertainment value for Lovecraft Country is a 10/10. If I were to critique it, it would be a 10/10; there is nothing I would change in this series. Now, Keep in mind the first season is not done yet; it still has two more episodes, so my score can change.
