31 Days of Horror: ‘The Nun’ Review

The Nun (2018)

This movie starts off with a young nun committing suicide so that Valak can not possess her. Once the church finds out about that suicide, they send a priest, Father Burke, and a nun, Sister Irene, that hasn’t made her final vows yet, to investigate if that land is still holy.

I had high hopes for The Nun. Just look at their record. In the conjuring universe, we had The Conjuring, Conjuring 2, which were both excellent. We also had Annabelle and Annabelle Creations. For me, the first Annabelle was the worst of the franchise. Another reason I was excited for The Nun was the advertising, which was very little, but very impactful at the same time. Remember when YouTube had to delete a spot because people complain it was too scary. That was brilliant and that really brought my excitement to a whole new level.

Lets talk about the things that I like about The Nun. I thought the best thing about The Nun was the cinematography. Maxime Alexandre did a great job with the camera movements, lighting, and overall look of the film. Still, I felt that you could tell when something scary happened because of the camera movements.

Another standout of the film is the soundtrack. Just like in most great horror films, the soundtrack is what keeps you engaged, and that is precisely what The Nun did for me.

If you are not a fan of a lot of jump scares, this isn’t for you, as for me, there were some jump scares that surprised me. When it did, I felt chills crawl down my spine, but the scares weren’t earned just like in most mediocre horror films, so it was not as impactful as some horror film like a nightmare on elm street (1984) and John Carpenter’s Halloween just to name a few.

I wasn’t really a fan of the characters themselves, but the acting I liked if that make since. The characters didn’t really have great motivation. One was just doing it because it was his job another just joked most of the time and the other we don’t know why she came. The church just called for her. I guess it is because she had a vision, but not entirely sure.

Overall I think most people will enjoy this, but for me it wasn’t a horror film that met my expectations and was just a disappointment. It had great things about it like the cinematography, score, and acting, but the story itself was not impressive, and at times, I was bored to death.
