Seven in 10 students say online learning is preferable to learning in a traditional classroom.

When the global pandemic was wreaking havoc, many students had no other option but online learning. Government mandates called for working and studying from home to slow the spread of the virus.

With the right technology, distance learning is a viable option that many people find preferable to going to school, sitting in a classroom, and listening to a teacher standing up front.

While some people prefer to be in a classroom, others don’t like being locked up in a classroom and tethered to a desk. The latter group enjoys distance learning for these five reasons.

    1. They Can Study Where They Want

Some people struggle when locked in a classroom and prefer distance learning. Whether in their living room, bedroom, or elsewhere, some students thrive in learning environments that don’t include a traditional classroom with other students and an instructor.

Considering that students will perform better if they’re comfortable, it makes sense to encourage distance learning as a viable option.

If students like to be outdoors, they can set up shop on their back deck at home. And if they need peace and quiet without distractions, they can complete their schooling from their home offices.

    1. They Can Study When They Want

Another reason people enjoy distance learning is that it’s not as rigid scheduling-wise as learning in a traditional classroom. As long as students know the curriculum and what’s expected of them, they can get things done when they want and at their own pace.

While some are okay with a strict schooling schedule and might even thrive with that arrangement, others prefer not to be stuck in a classroom from 9 am to 3 pm, Monday to Friday. Distancing learning means students will have greater freedom and control.

It’ll take discipline when there’s no schedule. However, if that’s the price to pay for the freedom distance learning offers, many students are willing to pay the price.

    1. They Can Study in a Way That’s Comfortable to Them

Students who are comfortable with technology and have the discipline to stay the course without a teacher breathing down their necks might feel more comfortable with distance learning than in-school learning.

It’s hard for some people to spend all day in a classroom. Going that route may compromise the learning experience and lead to lower outcomes than would otherwise be the case. So, students who feel more comfortable studying remotely will gravitate toward distance learning.

    1. They Can Study Without Upending Their Lives

It’s not always possible for people to put their lives on hold while they pursue an education. Sometimes there are familial responsibilities to consider, and other times it’s about money.

Some programs might require a full-time commitment, which could be hard for someone who relies on a paycheck and can’t afford to take time off to pursue an education.

Earning certifications online that don’t take a lot of time is another way to get an education without putting one’s life on the back burner.

One reason some people appreciate distance learning is they don’t have to choose an education over their jobs or families. They can leverage the power of online learning to fit getting an education around all the other things they have going on in their lives.

    1. They Prefer Their Privacy

People who are introverted might feel more comfortable with remote learning. They may not function as well in a classroom filled with others who are more like mere acquaintances than peers. The opportunity to take online courses can relieve cases of social anxiety and help students focus more on learning and less on uncomfortable small talk.

If you were wondering about the appeal of distance learning, now you have an idea. Not everyone prefers remote learning over traditional learning. But more and more people are appreciating the benefits of a learning option that they can do from anywhere.
