A Great Upcoming Year for Gaming: The Game Awards Trailers Breakdown

After the year we’ve had in the gaming industry I bet you’re up for a little rest next year right? No? Well, me neither and with the absolute truck-load of upcoming games, we’re going to be getting next year it’s a good job us nerds are always coming back for more. The Game Awards no only celebrated this year’s greatest hits but served as a nice menu for us greedy lot that are never too full to walk away from the table. With that being said we saw some games that look to be absolutely fantastic and some games that…really don’t, so let’s go through The Game Awards trailers and see what worked and what quite didn’t.

The Bad

I hate to already be putting games down especially when we only have short trailers to go on but these are the games that didn’t grab me or interest me in any way. Luckily there weren’t too many of these trailers but I still thought they were worth mentioning.

Ancestors: HumanKind Odessy. Ever thought about what it would be like to run around Africa 8 billion years ago as a damn dirty ape? No, I didn’t think so and thats why Ancestors: Humankind Odessy is a really weird choice to me. I’m sure there’s an audience out there for it but for me, out of all the settings you could have chosen for your game. Pre-historic Africa would not be high up on my list. What were your thoughts on the trailer?

Among Trees

Among Tress has a really interesting art design and I initially enjoyed the unique direction it seemed to be taking but that was really all it gave me. A pretty enough showcase which reminded me of the likes of Firewatch but with very little substance to back it up. I do hope that when we see more of this game I’ll be proven wrong but at this year’s Games Awards, Among Tress did very little attention to draw me in.

Rocket League

Rocket League a game that has surprisingly remained this popular for so long and had a really epic trailer at The Games Awards. There were stunts, incredible action, amazing goals and…one car. All of that for one car. This is going to sound incredibly nit-picky but after such an epic trailer I expected a little more than one car. On a more positive note, it is nice to see the game still get new content so long after launch.

The promising

This section is for the trailers that did grab my attention and really intrigued me but I was still left feeling unsure about them. These are the games that look promising but we want to see a little more gameplay before handing over our hard-earned cash.

Far Cry: New Dawn

The Far Cry series has been a bit hit or miss in recent years and for me personally, the future of the franchise is still up in the air. The bright psychedelic neon pink color pallet that definitely isn’t Fortnite inspired just doesn’t do it for me and I’m personally not sold on the new villainous twins. I did find it interesting that this is the first Far Cry game to carry on from its predecessor and if there is decent co-op play it might peak my interests but as of right now Far Cry: New Dawn is nothing ground-breaking.

Journey to the Savage Planet

Hot off of a year of success with Fortnite Epic Games is introducing an all-new IP with Journey to the Savage Planet a game that aesthetically clearly takes some influence from Fortnite but what of its gameplay and story? If one even exists. Well right now we know very little about either of those things s whilst I have high hopes for Journey to the Savage Planet based off Epic Game’s track record I’m definitely going to have to see more from the game.

The Good

Now its time to talk about the show-stealers. The trailer that took our breath away and got us hyped up for the next 12 months of adventures. All of these trailers not only looked great on the night but have left a lasting impression on me and I am thoroughly excited for each and every one of these games.

Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe

Not exactly a new game but new for all of us over on consoles, The Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe will not only bring the game to consoles but also add a whole host of new content to play through. Stanley Parable has become a cult classic with players and it had easily the funniest moments of The Game Awards this year and as someone who personally never got the chance to play it at launch I will definitely be picking this one up.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3

Marvel fans have had a pretty incredible year this year so its only fitting it ends on a high note with the reveal of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 which looked pretty damn great at the awards and I really like the idea of The Black Order being the main antagonists especially after mainstream audiences were introduced to them in Infinity War. It just kills me that this previously multi-platform franchise is now only a Switch exclusive. Despite my distaste, for not being able to play it myself it doesn’t take away from what looks like a great game, and what was a great trailer.

Scavengers

An extremely intriguing game from its name to the teaser we saw Scavengers looks extremely cool with a futuristic sci-fi world, a very intriguing intro into this universe and a bad-ass looking cast of character which I believe to be an all female team. Take notes Battlefield V, this is how it’s done. Apart from looking absolutely stunning, I’m just a sucker for space exploration and with a name like Scavengers maybe we can look forward to a good old-fashioned loot grind? We’ll have to wait and see.

The Outer Worlds

This is easily my most anticipated game to come out of The Game Awards. A mixture between Borderlands, No Man’s Sky and, Destiny from the developers of Fallout: New Vegas! Need I say more. Seriously That’s all Ive got to say about this unless you want me to repeat “I’M HYPED” 40 times, we’ll move on.

Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled

Not too much to say about this one other than if you’re a fan of the original Crash Team Racing or Crash Bandicoot you’re going to love this. Fast-paced, action-packed fun that looks to be a fantastic remaster of the original game. Perfect for nostalgic players and newcomers to the franchise alike.

Atlas

Atlas looks like Sea of Thieves if it was done the right first time and way more. Huge monsters, huge battles, huge fleets of ships and forts to battle and destroy with intense looking co-op play and a boatload of swashbuckling adventures. I just have one problem with this game. Why oh why must it be on PC only. Console players are going to have to miss out on this incredible looking game, at least for the foreseeable future but despite that, you can’t take away how epic Atlas looks.

Mortal Kombat 11

And last but by no means least a game that needs no introduction MK 11. The trailer was stunning and beautiful in the goriest way possible.  If you’re a fan of the MK series you’re already sold on this and if not then you really should check out Mortal Kombat 11 because not only was it one of the most solid trailers of the night but it will easily be one of the top games of next year.

So that wraps it up for my personal takeaways out of all the trailers we saw at this years Game Awards. Overall after an incredibly strong year of games next year is already shaping up to be a fantastic year and we haven’t even mentioned the likes of Anthem or The Last of Us 2 yet. You’ll be seeing some of these names pop up again in my most anticipated games of 2019 list but until then what did you think of these trailers at this years Game Awards? Let us know over on Twitter.
