‘Tis the season for holiday cheer. Everyone is in the spirit of giving, even the…spirits. CBS’s Ghosts just released its one-hour holiday special and has really delivered something special. Named A Very Arondekar Christmas, we were gifted with twists, turns, laughs, drama, gossip, and heartfelt moments that remind us that it isn’t the materialistic gift-giving that makes this time of year special.
Here Come the In-Laws
Ghostmas starts with letting us know that Jay’s family is coming to town and while Jay’s sister Bela is in the know when it comes to the ghosts, Jay’s mom and dad are not. Not only that, they’re not the biggest fan of Sam. Let’s be honest, Sam forces it a little, so we really can’t blame Jay’s mother for not being too thrilled about girl time with her daughter-in-law.
Things go spectacularly bad when an accident shoves Nancy in Sam’s body and Pete in Jay’s. While Betsy Sodaro is a stand-out as the basement dweller Nancy, Rose McIver touches upon her experience from being on iZombie to perfectly imitate our favorite cholera spirit. Speaking of zombies, there’s a nice Easter Egg regarding when McIver played the lead Liv Moore on The CW’s iZombie show – a personal fav of mine.
While Sam and others are mortified that Nancy has control of Sam’s body, the interactions between Nancy and Jay’s mother are gold. Jay’s experience with Pete is definitely tamer, but there’s a cool twist that actually pushes Jay outside of his own body, where he finally gets to meet the ghosts! This is something fans have waited four seasons for and it was oh so satisfying to watch.
Don’t Forget Thor and Sass
While the main plot is happening, we have a subplot of Thor and Sass’s friendship, which has taken a bit of a hit since Thor and Flower have started dating. Things get messier when Thor reveals a secret of Sass’s, causing friction between the two. While it’s a secondary plotline in the special, it actually has a sincere message behind it and allowed for these two characters to share some genuine moments of friendship.
The ending of the special is certainly a tearjerker and a reminder that this silly little ghost show can really hit the mark when they’re trying to be heartfelt. It was a really good way to end the special and remind viewers that Christmas and this holiday season is more than how much money you’ve spent on gifts. It’s about family, whatever that looks like. It’s nice when you can naturally get that from your favorite sitcom.
