Academy Considering Nixing Most Popular Category

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”3809″ img_size=”440×293″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]In early August, we reported that the Academy Awards were going to add a new category to its 2019 show; The Most Popular Movie. We in the superhero/comic book film genre looked forward to this development as it would open up the doors for movies that weren’t previously recognized by the Oscars to get the coverage they deserve. This category, though; has already been subject to controversy as someone express that it would hurt chances for the Best Film category and others saying this is the Academy’s way of simply trying to save their dwindling ratings.

According to some Academy members, they wouldn’t be surprised if the category was scrapped before we ever got to 2019. In an excerpt from the LA Times, it is stated:

“Several academy members say they wouldn’t be surprised if the academy backtracks and delays presenting the award this year or scraps it altogether.”

There have been no official statements from the Academy in regards to this matter, but I can see that it would cause controversy for the simple fact that whenever something new is proposed, there is always speculation and backlash. Only time will really tell if the Most Popular Movie will actually go through, but it would be nice to have a category that would recognize what movie was best received by audiences throughout the year and not just what a group of select members feel about the year.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
