When they announced Agatha All Along, I think we all thought that there wasn’t really a point to making a show based around the character Agatha from WandaVision, but we’d watch it anyway because why not? After the first episode, which was a snoozefest, it kind of looked like this show would go down as just another fumble after Avengers: Endgame.
This is Good – Very Good
However, Agatha All Along is good. Really good. Sure, it’s kooky, it’s not a masterpiece, but it’s fun. It’s engaging. It’s slightly horror-ish, which makes it perfect for Halloween. Plus, it does a good job in incorporating the witchy stuff of Marvel. It stands on its own and ties in nicely with the wider MCU at the same time. And Katherine Hahn is having the time of her life in this role. It’s a road trip adventure with twists and turns, along with goblins and ghouls.
And with the finale having just hit, this show actually may be one of Disney Plus’ best MCU addition. What started as a trip down the Witches Road ended with powerful magic, intense emotions, and a twist that was jaw-dropping. Katherine Hahn perfectly embodied the complicated character of Agatha, who was selfish, fun, devious, and tragic.
The Entire Cast is Amazing
But, Agatha All Along is an ensemble show. While Agatha stands out, everyone did a phenomenal job. Each of the witches brings something unique to the show, but of course, the two standouts are Aubrey Plaza as Rio aka Lady Death and Joe Locke as the Teen/Billy Maximoff. While Plaza does what Plaza does best and it was truly a twist that she is Death, it was Locke who really surprised us. It felt, at first; that they were just sticking a teen in the show to appeal to a younger audience, but to find out he’s Billy and he’s just as powerful as his mother was amazing. Billy becomes the heart of the show in the second half and it felt like Billy and Agatha’s paths were always destined to cross.
Seriously, Agatha All Along has it all. Fantastic visual effects, spooky/powerful witches, and a lot for Marvel fans to chew on. Finally getting Death in the MCU and to have her portrayed by Plaza feels like a fever dream that we never want to wake up from. Agatha started as a character who was a fun twist in WandaVision, but now feels like a standout in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel has done a great job in bringing witches into the MCU and what could have been a forgettable show now has us wanting more. The two-episode finale packs several punches and everyone delivers.
So, So Good
This might be a vague review, but we want people to watch this show, if they haven’t caught up. Do not write it off and just because Halloween is over, doesn’t mean you can’t still feel the spooky season vibes with Agatha All Along. It feels like the perfect continuation of WandaVision, where not everything is as it seems.
We’ve spoken about it before and so have plenty of other people, but the MCU has had some….not so great projects since Endgame. Many of them have been too silly that it borderlines cringe. Luckily, this show feels like a return to form for the MCU. There’s a lot of fun, but there’s also a lot of intense moments, emotional scenes that hit just right, and when the show wants to be scary, it’s scary. It’s almost unbelievable that so much effort was put into a show and a character that really no one batted an eye at once WandaVision ended. But, you know what? We’re so glad that the people behind this show put their best foot forward, because this feels like what the MCU is all about.
