American Gods Season Three Episode Three: Diving Deeper Into Laura’s Past

The third episode of American Gods season three is upon us. In this episode, we get a lot of different stories. We have the follow-up to Shadow Moon being accused of kidnapping the missing girl in Lakeside. Laura Moon’s second death. And what is happening to Bilquis? Plus, the introduction to Blythe Danner as Demeter!

There’s a lot that happens in this episode. My feeling for the reason they decided to pack so much in is that there’s so much to get to this season. So, they couldn’t spend entire episodes on each thing. Which, I didn’t mind. Out of all of the things that happened in episode three, the two biggest [for me] were Laura Moon’s Purgatory “adventures” and Danner’s introduction into this world.

Let’s Talk About Demeter

Without giving too much away, the character Easter is pretty important in the American Gods novel. Especially towards the end. But, if you remember, Kristin Chenoweth stepped away from the show after season one. They even mentioned in season two that Easter did not want to be a part of Wednesday’s war – due to him running over some of her rabbits. So, what do you do when you need Easter, but you don’t want to recast? You bring in another god from different mythology who does much of the same thing Easter/Ostara did. Hence, Demeter.

And can I say, I love having Demeter in American Gods. If you get a chance, look up Demeter in mythology. It’s a great story and it may pique your interest even further into Greek mythology. Danner plays Demeter wonderfully and I already love how she can go toe to toe with Ian McShane’s Mr. Wednesday. Let’s be fair, someone needed to smack him.

More to Laura Moon

Laura Moon is one of those characters that can cause people to absolutely dislike her as a person. Not only did she have an extramarital affair while her husband was in jail for a crime she coerced him to do, but she isn’t the nicest of people. Regardless, I have always liked Laura. Not because I loved her dynamic with Mad Sweeney (I mean, I do love it), but because she was/is incredibly real. When we see her peel back the facade she put on for Shadow, we see someone with a lot of flaws. We get used to loving characters we think are perfect, but we forget people are not perfect.

We also forget that a lot of what happens in someone’s childhood explains why they are the way they are as adults. This is the case for Laura Moon. Episode three goes down a memory lane that explains a lot about Laura. We see Laura finally break down her walls a little, though; not for long. It’s heartbreaking to think there is no one in Laura Moon’s life for her to confide in because everyone has villainized her. I personally liked seeing this scene and hope you do as well.

Rating: 4/5

I personally liked this episode. Even though it had a lot in it, I enjoyed it mostly because I believe this means we’re going to get a lot of substance in this season. We needed Demeter introduced early – as well as what happened to Bilquis. And we needed to get the search underway for the missing girl in Lakeside. What happens next? We have to wait to find out. All I know, based on the trailer for the next episode, I can’t wait to see Technical Boy and Shadow moon team up!
