‘American Gods’ Season Three Finale Review – A Lot of Unanswered Questions

I can’t believe the time has come where we say goodbye to the third season of American Gods! It’s been such a great season and I’m not ready for next Sunday to come and there’s no new American Gods. What a journey this has been. Off-screen and on screen. We’ve seen the show move more in the direction of the book, while adding in new aspects that truly work in this live-action adaptation. There’s a lot of unanswered questions and stories that have just begun. I’m crossing my fingers for a season four.

Spoilers

While there have been many characters and storylines that have strayed from the book, book lovers will really appreciate this season’s finale. It’s truly a return to the story everyone loved in Neil Gaiman’s book. We see Shadow keeping the promise he made Mr. Wednesday in season one. If Odin were to die, Shadow will have to sit vigil for him. At the time, in season one; we didn’t know what that meant. We do now. And even though it literally means death, Shadow decides to anyway. For someone who tried his best to distance himself from his father, he seems more determined than ever to follow in his footsteps.

Which, could be a little confusing at times, but Ricky Whittle does a great job in portraying Shadow’s turn in this episode. Shadow has been through a lot and it comes the time where he stops resisting his destiny and instead welcomes it. Everything should have told Shadow no, but he decided to go along with the vigil anyway – seemingly influenced by the sudden power he’s realizing he could gain from this. Who is this Shadow Moon? Who is this man who is considering killing his ex-wife and who is standing up against the likes of Czernobog? This is not the Shadow we met in season one. And we find out a very specific reason why he is behaving this way. And he will realize how this plays into a bigger plan that’s been in the works longer than he is aware of.

Laura and Bilquis

I normally like to stay away from spoilers in my reviews, but I have to talk about a few things here. First, I’m so very intrigued with Laura’s story from here. Season three has been about killing Wednesday. Since she’s accomplished this, what now? Which, is where Bilquis comes in. I’ve been wondering about Bilquis’s journey this entire season. While seeing her reach spiritual enlightenment was great, I’ve wondered where it was all leading towards. We come to find out that we still don’t fully know, but the idea of Bilquis and Laura teaming up is very intriguing to me. These are two polar opposites – how do they work together? We need season four to find out.

Mr. Ibis and Czernobog

I appreciated seeing Mr. Ibis and Czernobog interacting with each other here. Both characters are essential to American Gods and both actors execute their roles well. It’s interesting seeing Ibis take this sort of mentor role on, while Czernobog has gotten a taste of war – and he’s invigorated by it. Whereas in the past it seemed the God of Death wasn’t wanting to join Wednesday in his conquest – he’s fully committed now. Don’t expect him to let Shadow live down letting Laura walk away any time soon.

Finally, I want to talk about possibly the biggest reveal and the best payoff in season three. Technical Boy! Holy sh*t! The story was already progressing nicely, but the big reveal in regards to Technical Boy was insane! Part of me had felt that there had to be something more with everything they were showing us. I’m so utterly happy that Bruce Langley went from just playing this New God to playing what he’s playing now. The evolution is better than I could have asked for and the big reveal of who he really is makes me happy. So happy. Now, I just need all those wronged in the New Gods and all those wronged in the Old Gods to rise up against Wednesday and Mr. World.

Rating: 4.5/5

Season three’s finale felt the most cohesive and most built-up to season finales. While I have loved seasons one and two, season three felt as if it was driving toward something. That isn’t to say that season three didn’t have its speed-bumps either. But, it has had a lot of great payoffs along the way. Season three leaves the door open for more and frankly, all we need is one last season to tie everything together. Give us a season four, Starz, we’re waiting!
