By now, everyone knows about the Russo Brothers policy of only revealing parts of the script to the actors on a need to know basis. Their theory that it protects the actor from having too much knowledge to have to safeguard is a good way to avoid plot points from being leaked. It also sometimes means the actors are in the dark about something important that is about to happen in the story. Such was the case at the end of Avengers End Game and the climatic scene with Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson. [Spoiler]
Steve, who had went back in time to return the Infinity Stones, decided to learn something from Tony and take some “time” to live his life. He returned as an older Steve Rogers who had found happiness with the love of his life Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell)and chose to pass on the Captain America mantle to Sam, as Bucky (Sebastian Stan) watched approvingly.
As it turns out, Anthony Mackie who plays Falcon to Chris Evans Captain America didn’t know how the script had their relationship evolve. He only found out after Chris Evans told him as Mackie explained in an interview with IMDb.
We were at his house and he goes, ‘You excited?’ And I go, ‘What are you talking about?’ and he goes, ‘You don’t know?’ He jumps up, runs out of the room and comes back in with the script,
After he read the ending, Mackie admitted to being shocked by the conclusion, and happy how he found out about it. He also explained how much pride he had in the idea of him becoming Captain America, especially for his own children.
We cried. We drank. We laughed,” he said of the evening. “I am very happy I got that moment with Chris, for him to not only pass me the shield, but to tell me it was happening. It means a lot to me for my sons to see Captain America as a black dude and for me to be that dude to my sons. So that moment was not just, ‘Hey, we’re acting.’ It was more of a thing. And then they cut and I cried. And Chris cried. And the Russos cried. And everyone cried. It was an emotional day.
It was an emotional moment for the audience as well and a fitting conclusion to the Steve Rogers chapter of Captain America to come to an end.
