Sovereign is an upcoming series from Emmy winner Ava DuVernay and Bird Runningwater. And t’s just been given a pilot commitment by NBC. Sovereign will be written by Sydney Freeland and Shaz Bennet from a story by DuVernary. This is the first Native American family drama that has been and is being developed for network television.
Sovereign will center around the lives of a “sprawling Indigenous family” that struggles to protect their tribe against outside forces, as well as themselves. The show will be produced by DuVernay’s ARRAY Filmworks in association with Warner Bros. Television. Runningwater will act as the co-executive producer alongside ARRAY’s Sarah Bremner and Paul Garnes.
