WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS FOR AVENGERS: ENDGAME

Avengers: Endgame was the culmination of ten years of fantastic cinema for the MCU and we saw the love-letter that the Russo Brothers provided for us; there were many surprises, lots of fan service, and a lot of tears. Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it almost seemed poetic to have him be sent off the way he was; protecting the entire universe from the terrors of Thanos and ultimately, making the biggest sacrifice in the process. We all cheered hearing his famous words “I am Iron Man” before snapping his fingers and we all gasped in shocked and cried in anguish seeing that not even Tony Stark could survive the Infinity Stones.

During an interview THR, co-director Anthony Russo explained how Robert Downey Jr. initially had mixed emotions about the ending that was pitched to him:

“We did pitch Robert his arc, because he kicked off the entire MCU. The Tony Stark arc is the longest and perhaps fullest in the MCU. Once we decided we wanted this kind of ending for the character, we certainly wanted to make sure Robert was comfortable with it, just because of his enormous contribution to the MCU. We did pitch it out. We went over to meet with him and we pitched it out to him.”

He added:

“A lot of the actors are not opinionated about what we do. They like the fact that we are sort of in control of these stories and we are driving where they should go and we have a vision for where they should go and they trust in that. I think Downey may have had mixed emotions about thinking about [where Tony Stark ends up in Endgame], but I think at the end of the day, he totally accepted it.”

We can see where Downey was coming from – seeing as his character, who has been through so much; didn’t ultimately get a happy ending. But, from a storytelling viewpoint, it was beautifully tragic and the ultimate sacrifice that shows how important Iron Man is, and how much Tony Stark meant to the survival of others. We all cried, as I’m sure you did as well, so tell us what you thought about Tony’s end, and do you think Marvel would find a way to bring him back in the future?
