“It’s bananas,” commented Funko Art Director Reis O’Brien on Baby Yoda’s seemingly overnight rise to fame.
Seriously? Let’s face it: the whole human population turns into a pile of mush at the mere thought of Baby Yoda. His little three-fingered hands…those saucer-shaped eyes….the endearingly enormous ears – even Mr. Mandalorian himself couldn’t resist this impossibly adorable creature.
So, I’m not surprised.
While the exact figures have yet to be released, The Child (a.k.a. Baby Yoda) has already claimed the top spot as the best selling Funko Pop of all time. The news broke earlier today after O’Brien posted a video to the Twitterverse discussing the toy’s development.
Interestingly enough, design specs for the character were kept highly confidential – only a few in the very inner circle were privy to the details. That’s because Disney sent over the information prior to the release of The Mandalorian.
And in case you were wondering, O’Brien wasn’t granted an early showing of the series before its official debut (bummer for him). He admitted, “They’ve got to guard spoilers, they’ve got to keep secrets…As far as story points go, we get nothing.”
The Baby Yoda Funko Pop, which was unveiled in December, is currently available for pre-order and will be released in May.
