When it was announced that Baz Luhrmann was making a bio pic on Elvis long time manager Colonel Tom Parker, the first question was, who would play Elvis? That was the first question because he had already pegged Tom Hanks for the role of Colonel Parker. Now after a long search and painstaking auditions, Luhrmann has chosen his Elvis. Austin Butler has been selected to play the legendary performer. The director knew after landing Hanks he needed to nail the role of Elvis. To accomplish this, he spent a great deal of time in the process. He feels he has done his due diligence:
I knew I couldn’t make this film if the casting wasn’t absolutely right. We searched thoroughly for an actor with the ability to evoke the singular natural movement and vocal qualities of this peerless star, but also the inner vulnerability of the artist. Throughout the casting process, it was an honor for me to encounter such a vast array of talent. I had heard about Austin Butler from his stand-out role opposite Denzel Washington in ‘The Iceman Cometh’ on Broadway. After a journey of extensive screen testing and music and performance workshops, I knew unequivocally that I had found someone who could embody the spirit of one of the world’s most iconic musical figures.
The plan for the production is to start filming in 2020 to accommodate Tom Hank’s busy schedule. Are you onboard with Luhrmann’s selection for the “King of Rock and Roll?” Share your thoughts on the hire with us at Geek Vibes Nation.
