Bird Box was an interesting Netflix film that divided fans, but there’s more to come in this horror world. In book form! The 2018 film was based on a novel written by Josh Malerman. Josh has written a sequel and it’s coming out on July 21st.
Malorie is the name of the book and is also the name of the character Sandra Bullock played in the Netflix movie. According to Malerman, Malorie picks up right where the novel and movie left off.
“Malorie opens at the school for the blind, which is where the movie ends. Then it jumps a few years later, and it really takes off 10 years after that.”
On top of this, there is a sequel to the movie in the works:
“I can’t say much, but I can say that it is in development. Sometimes it’s weird, all this secrecy, but I’m game.”
Due to the popularity of Netflix’s Bird Box, Malerman was inspired to write the second novel. It should be noted, though; that Malerman claims that the film did not sway his ideas for his sequel-novel:
“It took about the same amount of time. I was also aware that there was a possibility that Sandra Bullock wouldn’t be playing Malorie. When you first start writing novels, especially now, how do you not see them cinematically? We grew up on movies. So with Bird Box, I always saw it cinematically. It almost reads like stage directions. It felt the same writing Malorie, but I didn’t have Sandra Bullock in mind when I wrote the first one.”
You can pick up Malorie on July 21st wherever books are sold.
