Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is well underway, according to actress Ella Basco’s recent social media post. According to Twitter, the cast has sat down for their first table read.

Basco will portray Cassandra Cain in the upcoming DC movie, which will also see the return of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. The rest of the cast consists of Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez), and Black Mask (Ewan McGregor). Filming will likely start in January and according to Robbie, the film will be rated R.
“Yep, yes exactly, real life isn’t so one specific images. We’ve got to reflect that onscreen.”
“I pitched the idea of an R-rated girl gang film including Harley, because I was like, ‘Harley needs friends.’ Harley loves interacting with people, so don’t ever make her do a standalone film. She’s got to be with other people, it should be a girl gang. I wasn’t seeing enough girl gangs on screen, especially in the action space. So that was always a big part of it.” – Robbie explained.
While it seems that Marvel is moving away from the R-rated industry with the deal between Fox and Disney, it’ll be interesting to see an R-rated DC film come to life. Of course, we’ve had them before, but this is the first one in the current DC Universe.
