Birds of Prey Takes Advantage of Unused Footage from 2016’s Suicide Squad

Spoilers for Birds of Prey

If you’ve seen DC’s recent film Birds of Prey, some footage may have seemed familiar to you. The movie has been promoted as a standalone, but make no mistake that it is a spinoff of David Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad. If it wasn’t obvious enough, footage from the 2016 film was used. Cathy Yan was asked about the seen of Harley Quinn going into the chemicals at ACE Chemical Plant. Yan was asked if this scene was new or recycled:

“We actually did use some Suicide Squad footage, yeah. … I think we tweaked it a little bit to fit into our world. But I think that the whole point was that it should feel like a memory. That was everything that she was thinking through the flashes of that. That was what was impacting her as she was driving too her thing. I really liked that. I liked that little flourish. And I think it helped remind people what the significance of ACE chemicals is.”

Since Birds of Prey has recycled footage, despite saying it’s a standalone film; does this mean James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad might do the same? Considering it too states it is a standalone and not a sequel?
