The DCEU may look like it’s going to be stronger than ever, but it’s also more disconnected than ever. We have remnants of the old DCEU creeping up here and there and three movies who share the same actress (Margot Robbie) who is playing the same character (Harley Quinn), yet everyone says none of the movies connect? With these confusing timelines, we are wondering if there will be any DCEU Easter Eggs in the self-proclaimed self-contained Birds of Prey. This was something others wondered to and it was presented as a question to writer Christina Hodson. Hodson did answer such question at a press event for the movie:
“I don’t want to spoil too much. I would say this is definitely a standalone movie. We always wanted it to be a story that feels like its own thing, its own contained story that if you’re a fan and you’ve seen some of the movies before, if you’ve already met Harley Quinn, but also if you’re brand-new to this universe, you can also come in and feel perfectly at home here. As a fan myself, I would like to hopefully list it with some funny threads that people are gonna like. But yeah, we’ll have to wait and see”
Robbie first premiered as Harley in 2016’s Suicide Squad. Despite playing the same character in Birds of Prey and James Gunn’s upcoming The Suicide Squad movie, both spin-offs claim to be their own thing. It’s a little confusing, but you have to just roll with it. We are! Are you excited for Birds of Prey, which hits theaters on February 7?
