Black Ops 4 Blackout Trailer Breakdown

So the trailer for Black Ops 4’s newest addition, its Blackout ‘Battle Royal’ mode dropped about 15 hours ago and to my utter surprise…it actually really impressed me. It looks like the most fun to come out of a Call Of Duty game in recent years and whilst most of it is down to the vehicles rather than the boots on the ground gameplay it still looks like the most interesting thing to come from Call of Duty recently.

Initial Impressions

The trailer was completely action packed, cut together extremely well, and full of quick short but consistent burst of action that feels right in line with the multiplayer of Call Of Duty. Whether or not this is a giant misdirect we’ll have to wait and see but this trailer makes me think this could be a more faced paced battle royal with less wandering and waiting and more intense action which could be what makes BO4’s battle royal stand out amongst all its competitors.

Call Of Duty’s Roots

Even though this is the newest additions to Call of Duty it certainly doesn’t forget its roots. There are hints of the previous Call Of Duty games littered throughout this trailer and I think that really strengthened it. Stuff like recurring characters, locations, and even Zombies (yes zombies in battle royal) is evidence that they know their market and they’re really pushing for them to pick this up and I think it’ll work. For once it shows that COD is actually evolving and changing in a fun way rather than repeating the same old crap they have done for the last 600 years.

Getting Hands-On

Now whilst the trailer did impress me I’ve been burned one too many times to take it at face value. To really know if this mode will be a success we’ll have to get hands-on and actually play it. Will we have bullet drop or will it be classic COD “whoever pulls the trigger first wins”? Will the vehicles be overpowered or will they be so weak they’re not even worth using? These are questions that a trailer, especially a trailer like this cant answer so we’re going to have to sit here and hope they don’t balls it up until release. Speaking of which I pray to God that this battle Royal isn’t littered with micro-transaction or if it is at least take a leaf out of Fortnites book and make them cosmetic only.

The Map

At first, I was hesitant about the map and when I learned it was not only smaller than PUBG but smaller than Fortnite which need I remind you is a FREE TO PLAY I was a little disappointed but the more I thought about it having a smaller map may be a great idea. First of all, rumors state that the battle royal will be between 80 players rather than 100 so I suppose a smaller map will be better for a slightly smaller number of players. Plus a smaller map will help keep those quick, bursts of action going and it will make it feel more like COD which has always used smaller, tighter 6V6 maps rather than the huge maps that games like Battlefield or Planetside use. Also having the map be made up of Call Of Duty’s best maps from the past is pure genius.

Overall this trailer has really increased my hype for this game but the very fact that its called Call Of Duty is making me hesitant. It looks great but I still want to know more and see some proper gameplay before I decide if I’m going to throw my cash at it. So, what are your thoughts on this trailer? Are you excited for Black Ops 4 and its new Blackout mode or are you getting tired of the Battle Royal craze? Lets us know down below or over on Twitter. Huge thanks for reading guys and I’ll catch you next time.
