‘Black Widow’ Cast Discuss Their Characters and Talk Family Dynamics

Marvel’s Black Widow is finally coming to movie theaters on July 9th and promotion for the film is really picking up. Geek Vibes Nation was lucky enough to join in during a recent press conference between the stars of Black Widow to tease what fans can expect from the experience.

This is the Black Widow’s Story

First of all, if you haven’t seen Avengers: Endgame (which came out in 2019), here’s a spoiler: Natasha Romanoff dies in the film. The character, made famous by Scarlett Johansson; had been in the MCU since 2010’s Iron Man 2. In Endgame she makes the ultimate sacrifice to ensure that her teammates – her “family” – save the world against Thanos. So, Black Widow is a prequel film.

Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige was asked during the conference how they were approaching this movie considering Natasha’s future:

“Well, it meant we very specifically knew there was a large period of her life that we didn’t know about. Not just her childhood, but this period of time between, um, Civil War and Infinity War. And that period we felt was ripe to creatively focus on, to be able to discover more about her past and more about her present. And with many of the lovely people, you see on this Zoom, uh, give a hint at the-at the legacy in the future all at the same time, thanks to Cate Shortland.”

Johansson was then asked about what different aspects of Natasha do we see in this film:

“Um, you know, I think Cate, you know, she had mentioned that Natasha at the beginning of this film is really alone for the first time. Um, you know, she’s always been a part of something, either you know, by being of circumstance, uh, you know, she’s been a part of, uh, you know, starting out with, you know, really not participating at all, and-and being a victim of the Red Room.”

Johansson continued:

“And then she’s blindsided by this person who comes from her past who is just on fire.”

Florence Pugh, who plays Yelena in the film; talked about her character’s relationship with Johansson’s Natasha:

“Despite, you know, her skillset she is that wonderfully, um, annoying young assistant that says all the right things in all the wrong times. So that wasn’t hard at all for me to get into that. I think something that I, uh, really appreciated was, um, Cate was so, uh, welcoming of me to figure out how-how she thinks and how she moves and what she wears. And I think for me that was such a fun part of figuring out this character, because she really comes out of the Red Room. Cate really encouraged me to find, you know the oddities of her and-and kinda lean on that.”

Pugh had also gone into what makes the sisterly relationship between Yelena and Natasha so special. One that can be a fun and caring one despite also being deeply rooted in pain for both of them.

The Red Guardian

As someone who was able to see an early screening of Black Widow (our review will be posted up on the 26th), I can say that David Harbour’s Red Guardian was my favorite character. Seemingly larger than life, Harbour’s Alexei definitely has to be over the top to hide some of the deeply rooted emotions he feels for the girls. Here’s Harbour saying it in his own words:

“He has to be some bombastic because he can’t stop and feel these things, you know, the failures that he made. So he has to build around him a world of, like, a confabulatory, psychotic reality where he’s the real hero.”

Believe me when I say this is a movie you aren’t going to want to miss!
