Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow may have sacrificed herself in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, but she’s set to return next month in Black Widow. As a prequel of sorts, Black Widow explores a previously unseen chapter in Natasha’s life. However, the film may also end up being Johansson’s goodbye to the character.
In an interview with ComicBook.com’s Brandon Davis, Johansson discussed whether or not this would be the final time audiences would see her as Natasha, saying:
“Honestly, I feel like it’s always, it feels great to leave a party when it’s still raging and I think that this film feels very much like it’s alive and fresh and powerful and I feel really pleased with it. I feel really happy with the work that we’ve done for this decade of time and, you know, it’s bitter sweet to say, ‘Goodbye,’ but if you love something, you need to set it free!”
Answering Old Questions
Elsewhere in the interview, Davis asked Johansson about some of the film’s callbacks. Specifically, how it touches on something first mentioned in 2012’s The Avengers – Natasha’s past in Budapest. Johansson replied:
“Kevin Feige loves a good payoff moment, and so there’s definitely pieces in this. You know, when we… When it was kind of like pie in the sky – what is this like, what are we making, what are the things we want to accomplish with this? Obviously Budapest was up there. We were like, ‘We gotta, we have to scratch that itch, right?” Like yeah, we have to, okay. So, that’s going to be something. The city, obviously, is so cinematic and beautiful. And it would be, I think we’d make too many people angry if we didn’t go to Budapest. Like, there would be riots in the street.”
How do you feel about Black Widow potentially being the final time we see Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff?
