Blumhouse On The Possibility of Reviving the Dark Universe

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”3088″ img_size=”800×500″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]With the anticipation of Halloween releasing, Jason Blum of Blumhouse is hoping to resurrect a few other slasher films as well. Wanting to pluck Friday the 13th out of the grave, he is also hoping to bring back to life the mostly abandoned Dark Universe. Think of the Dark Universe as the Avengers or Justice League-styled franchise, but with horror movie monsters. There had been some collaborations between monsters back in the day between the likes of Dracula and Frankenstein and in 2003, we had Freddy vs Jason which brought together famous slasher icons Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees. There was once supposed to be a ‘Freddy vs Jason vs Ash‘, but that never got off the ground.

There is definitely an audience for this kind of collaborative horror movie mash-up. A mock script for a ‘Freddy vs Jason vs Michael Myers script was even conceived on an IGN board. Maybe the world wasn’t ready then for this kind of ambitious movie world, but with the MCU and DCEU as popopular as it is, people now enjoy these integrated worlds in between solo films.

Blum took to twitter recently to discuss films such as The Crow (which was supposed to feature Jason Momoa but now the film is dead in the water), Scream, and Friday the 13th. There has been success with franchising recent horror films like Paranormal Activity, The Purge, and sequels to M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable with Split and the upcoming film, Glass.

You can find a question and answers feed here, where Blum went on to say that procuring the rights to other horror films were excellent and that if Halloween did well in the theaters this October 19th, then there could be a sequel. While it would seem that everyone is getting on the CU style bandwagon, the Dark Universe and horror films, in general, have always been trying to do a large collaborative effort. Imagine having the likes of Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, Pinhead, Chucky, and Candyman in a film? Or the classic Hollywood monsters such as Frankenstein, the Invisible Man, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the Mummy, and more?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
