Synopsis: What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister?
The horror genre has seen many iterations since the beginning of cinema. From demonic possessions, child dolls come to life, creatures from outer space, etc., but Brightburn took a well known origin of DC’s Superman and replicated an Injustice teen version of Superman. The trailers definitely did not do it justice, and I went in there with average expectations but walked away with it exceeding my expectations.
In this story, what if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister? The story’s pacing is fast and the dialogue is tight to where they do not waste any scene or drag on a moment for too long, and that is one of the positives with this film. With an approximately hour and a half run time, it is plenty of time to introduce the several characters and show us the characteristics of the lead. The plot was simple and easy to follow which is fine in the genre of horror, but it is the interactions of Brandon Breyer (Jackson A. Dunn) with his family and friends that made this film engaging, and at times scary to watch. The gruesome death scenes were amazing for me. If a lot of blood and body parts being disassembled is not something that you want to see then you may want to skip this film.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”22622″ img_size=”780×442″ alignment=”center”][vc_single_image image=”22624″ img_size=”780×442″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]The film did have some horror cliche’s such as the adults being naive and not thinking rationally (at least one of the adults sort of thought rationally), but I will excuse that because the writing made these cliches realistic in its setting. There is not a lot to say about the writing, it was not groundbreaking or particularly fresh, but it was definitely the strong point of the film.
The chemistry between Tori (Elizabeth Banks) and Kyle Breyer (David Denman) was great and really made me believe in their family fun loving atmosphere, and the gradual transition of their challenge dealing with a teenager with powers. Speaking of the teenager, Brandon Breyer was extraordinarily creepy and also terrifying to watch, and if that is what the director (David Yarovesky) wanted then it was delivered well.
This film did not have a lot of negatives, and if I am being honest I cannot recall a negative for this film. Honestly, this film was well written and the jump scares come out you a lot, but it was effectively placed and I believe Brightburn will be a hidden gem for any horror fan. The trailer’s may not make it seem legit, but the dynamic between the characters, the gruesome death scenes, and the twist of the origin of Superman make this film a joy to watch several times and more.
