Bruce Campbell has drawn a firm line under his long association with Ash Williams, declaring that he is completely done with the character — including any voice work in animated projects.
In a recent interview promoting his new film Ernie & Emma, Campbell stated simply that “Ash is done.” He went further by ruling out the possibility of voicing the character in animation, saying he will not take on any animated voice roles as Ash. If future filmmakers want the character back, he suggested they could hire a soundalike or use modern technology to recreate his voice.
A Career-Defining Role
Campbell first played the chainsaw-handed hero in Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead in 1981. He returned for Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness, then brought the character back for three seasons of the Starz series Ash vs Evil Dead. After that show ended, he stepped away from live-action performances as Ash while leaving the door open for an animated continuation.
That door is now closed. For several years Campbell had spoken positively about a potential animated version of Ash vs Evil Dead, though he often noted how slowly such projects move. Those plans are no longer on his agenda.
Health and Shifting Priorities
Campbell’s decision comes after he publicly shared earlier this year that he is dealing with a form of cancer he described as treatable but not curable. He has said he intends to cut back on his workload and public appearances so he can focus more on his health.
Playing Ash has always been physically demanding. After more than four decades of stunts, fake blood, and relentless Deadite battles, Campbell has decided the time has come to put the boomstick away for good.
The Future of the Evil Dead Franchise

While Campbell is stepping away, the Evil Dead series itself continues. He served as an executive producer on recent entries including Evil Dead Rise and Evil Dead Burn, and even contributed a brief vocal cameo to the former.
Upcoming projects are moving forward without relying on Ash. Francis Galluppi is directing Evil Dead Wrath, the franchise’s first prequel, currently targeted for a 2028 release. Evil Dead Burn also left the door open for Alyssa Sutherland’s character Ellie to return in future stories.
After more than forty years, Campbell has permanently retired the role that made him a horror icon. Ash Williams will live on in the existing films and series, but new adventures will feature different faces and voices.
