Buffy The Vampire Slayer’s James Marsters Says Joss Whedon Was Unhappy Over Character’s Popularity

The accusations against director Joss Whedon are piling up. Starting with Ray Fisher, who took to Twitter not too long ago to rebuff all of the positives things he said [about Whedon] from 2017’s SDCC, a few people in the business have come forward. One being James Marsters. Marsters became a fan favorite from Buffy The Vampire Slayer. After having joined season two as the punk rock vampire Spike, he wasn’t originally meant to be a large part of the show.

It was due to his popularity that he ended up returning for one episode in season three and becoming a main character in season four. He also reprised the role in a Buffy spinoff show called Angel. While you would think that this sort of buzz would be a good thing, Marsters recalls Whedon not being happy about it.

Marsters appeared on Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast Inside of You. In Buffy, vampires were meant to be ugly. So, it didn’t really go along with Whedon’s narrative to have a good looking vampire who went on to become a love interest for the main character.

Marsters recalls an incident when Whedon expressed this sentiment:

“I came along, and I wasn’t designed to be a romantic character. But then the audience reacted that way to it. And I remember he backed me up against a wall one day. He was just like, ‘I don’t care how popular you are, kid, you’re dead. You hear me? Dead. Dead!’ And I was just like, ‘Uh, you know, it’s your football, man. OK’.”

When Rosenbaum asked if Whedon was joking, Marsters clarified:

“No, hell no He was angry at the situation.”

Marsters also added that Whedon never apologized. What do you think about Marsters comments?
