Can Newcastle United spend enough money to avoid the Premier League drop?

Whilst football certainly isn’t all about money, having plenty in the bank certainly helps. For Newcastle United, their relative fortunes changed overnight, with Saudi ownership coming into the club in October – in a move that technically saw the Magpies become the richest side in the world.

However, as plenty of other sides have found out in recent years, having unlimited resources in the transfer market doesn’t guarantee success and Newcastle are still battling away in the Premier League relegation zone – having only won one league game this season.

Losing at home to League One side Cambridge United in the FA Cup was a real recent low point, with new manager Eddie Howe unable to bring about the sort of consistency Newcastle fans and players have been craving.

Optimism is often never too far away for the Geordies however and the acquisitions during the January transfer window of Chris Wood from Burnley and Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid have certainly lifted the mood around St James’s Park.

However, with just 18 games to go in the league for Newcastle this season, it is very much now or never for Eddie Howe’s new side.

Newcastle United are currently +100 odds to go down into the Championship, a frightening prospect for all associated with the club and they know results have to start improving and improving fast, reports Offers.Bet, the website about betting promotions.

Elsewhere, Burnley are currently propping up the table – with their side decimated by COVID protocols and injuries. Selling Chris Wood to Newcastle was a tough break for the Clarets too, who have only amassed 11 points so far this term.

At -225, Sean Dyche’s side are clearly up against it, but they are a team that never gives in, and should they start finding some form once more in the Spring, they have the potential to climb away from trouble quickly.

Norwich City meanwhile are the hot favourites to go down this season, with Dean Smith’s side as little as -1000 to go down with some bookmakers.

They have picked up some decent wins in recent weeks, but they are a side that is a little thin on the ground and they need something drastic to change if they are to pull away from safety.

Another side that have had to endure the ups and downs associated with Premier League relegation in recent seasons is Watford and once again the Hornets are in the mix this term.

Claudio Ranieri was whisked in from the wilderness to transform Watford’s season, something which has yet materialised and the side from North London are only one point and one place above the drop zone.

At -175 to go down, they still have their fate in their own hands, and they also know that a few good results could transform their season.

Elsewhere, there are a few sides on the periphery of the relegation scrap this term, all of whom will desperately be trying to avoid getting dragged into it.

Everton have parted with Rafa Benitez as manager and find themselves in the doldrums at +800 to drop down to the Championship, whilst Leeds United have been shipping far too many goals this term and they too have one eye over their shoulder at +900 to go back down into the second division.
