Cathy Yan Says ‘Birds of Prey’ Kind of Exists In A “Parallel” Timeline

Focusing on the characters

When Justice League and Batman v Superman were being made, DC was working toward a connected Universe, similar to Marvel. When this proved to be problematic, they decided to focus more on singular films. This has proven to be successful as a string of such films have righted the proverbial ship. From Suicide SquadWonder Woman, Aquaman, and Shazam!, DC has started giving Marvel a run for its money…literally.

Bird of Prey

With this success in mind, DC has continued to push toward films that tell their own story. This includes the upcoming Birds of Prey. And while the film stars Margot Robbie, who is reprising her role as Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad, the films are not really connected. At least not closely, as Producer Sue Krolls explains:

This is a standalone movie and it’s not a sequel or tied in any way to Suicide Squad.

This includes the time frame for the film, as Director Kathy Yan chimes in:

There is not any known amount of time between the two movies according to Yan. We kind of exist in a parallel timeline.

An Origin Story

What this film does however, is serve as a form of origin story for The Birds of Prey as Robbie explained:

It’s more of an origin story for the Birds of Prey and how this version of the group might come together. Those characters coming together include Harley Quinn, Black Canary, and Gotham PD’s Renee Montoya.

Seeing Through Harley’s Eyes

The way these characters will be explored will hinge on the narration of Harley, whose perspective is not the most stable which Robbie admits:

Harley is the narrator of the story. A very unreliable, erratic narrator. Which this is fun, it also gives the audience an opportunity to kind of be inside her brain sometimes. This allows them to see the world through her eyes. I guess you’ll have to wait and see how well she does or does not get along with the Birds of Prey in the end. But ultimately, I think she is a not a traditional member of the Birds of Prey.
