Chris Hemsworth and Russell Crowe Working On A ‘GLADIATOR’ Sequel?

We love a good rumor, especially if that rumor is something really interesting. The rumor comes from New Idea and they report that Chris Hemsworth and Russell Crowe have had talks about doing Gladiator 2. The first Gladiator came out in 2000 and was a massive success both critically and financially. It would take home 5 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Crowe won for Best Actor. Directed by Ridley Scott, Gladiator also starred Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen, Richard Harris and Djimon Hounsou.

Since the film was released there have been rumors and reports that a prequel and sequel was in the works. New Idea says Hemsworth has been begging Crowe to make a sequel to Gladiator. Chris Hemsworth’s wife even thinks they could pass for father and son

“She’s often joked they could easily pass off as father and son – and Russell thinks he could be the only man to credibly play his son in a Gladiator sequel,”

Does this mean Hemsworth would be playing his son in the film? No, but that’s an interesting thought.

In the first film, Maxmimus’ (Crowe) wife and son were both killed at the orders of evil Emperor Commodus (Phoenix). The film never mentions Maximus having a second son but Connie Nielsen, who plays Lucilla, does have a son named Lucius. Back in 2019 there were reports a sequel to Gladiator would focus on Lucius.

Could Hemsworth possibly be playing a grown up Lucius? He wasn’t the son of Maximus in the film but who is stopping Hollywood from making up what they want to? The other possibility is that Maximus had a son that wasn’t mentioned in the first film at all.

Right now it sounds like talks are happening but nothing serious. Would Crowe make a rerun in some capacity? Would Scott be on board to direct? A lot of questions and not a lot of answers. I do think Hemsworth would be a great choice to carry on the Gladiator legacy should they decide to revisit the film.
