Christopher Landon’s departure from Scream VII wasn’t just a creative choice—it was a reaction to a nightmare of death threats and FBI involvement. The director, known for Happy Death Day and Paranormal Activity, told Vanity Fair , that the backlash following Melissa Barrera’s firing by Spyglass turned his dream gig into a harrowing ordeal. Here’s how the Scream franchise turmoil unfolded and why Landon walked away.
The Spark: Melissa Barrera’s Firing
In November 2023, Spyglass fired Melissa Barrera, star of Scream (2022) and Scream VI, over her pro-Palestine social media posts amid the Israel-Hamas conflict. Landon, tapped to direct Scream VII, took to Twitter with a since-deleted post: “Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make.” Fans, however, misread his involvement, pinning Barrera’s exit on him. “I did not fire her,” Landon clarified. “A lot of people think I had something to do with it, and it was not my doing. I had no control of the situation at all.”
Jenna Ortega’s Exit and a Crumbling Project
The fallout didn’t stop with Barrera. Jenna Ortega, Barrera’s co-star, also left Scream VII. Initial reports cited scheduling conflicts with Wednesday Season 2, but Ortega later told The Cut it was Barrera’s firing that drove her decision. “The Melissa stuff was happening, and it was all kind of falling apart,” she said. “If Scream VII wasn’t going to be with that team of directors and those people I fell in love with, then it didn’t seem like the right move for me.” For Landon, losing Barrera was “devastating,” sending the project “tumbling down in an instant.”
Death Threats and FBI Involvement
The real horror came off-screen. Fans, misunderstanding Landon’s role, unleashed a torrent of hate. “People were threatening to kill me and my family, to the point where the FBI was getting involved,” he revealed. Messages included chilling threats like, “I’m going to find your kids, and I’m going to kill them because you support child murder.” Landon, who shares two sons, ages five and eight, with husband Cody Morris, said studios’ security heads and the FBI stepped in to investigate. “It was highly aggressive and really scary,” he added, noting the abuse stemmed from confusion over Hollywood’s hierarchy.
Why He Quit
Spyglass urged Landon to stay and reboot the film, but the toll was too high. “The amount of abuse that I had to deal with—I decided I didn’t want to give any part of myself to that,” he said. “The hate and abuse really spoiled it for me, and I lost my love for the idea of going forward.” On December 23, 2023, he announced his exit, calling it “a dream job that turned into a nightmare.” The experience left him grieving a lost opportunity to join Wes Craven’s legacy, but he refused to let it define him.
Turning Pain Into ‘Drop’
Landon channeled the chaos into his new thriller, Drop. Starring Meghann Fahy, it follows a woman terrorized by anonymous texts demanding she kill her date—or lose her son. “I was able to use that unpleasant experience and turn it into something positive,” he said. “My best revenge was making something cool, rooted in joy and moving forward.” Meanwhile, Scream VII is now in the hands of original screenwriter Kevin Williamson, a move Landon supports. “Kevin probably made a banger of a movie,” he predicted. “There’s no resentment at all.”
A Franchise—and Director—Tested
Landon’s ordeal highlights the volatile intersection of fandom, politics, and Hollywood in 2023. Despite the scars, he’s emerged with Drop as proof he can thrive beyond the Scream saga. For fans, the question lingers: can Scream VII recover? Landon hopes so, but he’s done answering Ghostface’s calls.
