In the galaxy far, far away that is Hollywood’s casting landscape, even iconic actors like Christopher Walken and Jodie Foster once vied for roles in the legendary Star Wars franchise. As revealed in recent interviews, Walken reminisced about auditioning for the role of Han Solo, ultimately portrayed by Harrison Ford, while Foster aimed for the part of Princess Leia, famously played by Carrie Fisher.
Recalling his Star Wars audition, Walken shared insights into the competitive process that involved hundreds of actors. He described a screen test with Foster, noting that in those early days, auditions often consisted of sitting in front of vintage videotape cameras. Despite the enormity of the audition pool, Walken affirmed, “Yes, I did audition for Star Wars, but so did about 500 other actors. It was lots of people doing that.”
Foster, too, opened up about her Star Wars audition experience during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The Oscar-winning actress revealed that she not only auditioned for the role of Leia but was offered the part, though she had to decline due to a conflicting commitment with a Disney movie she was already contractually obligated to.
Reflecting on the casting decision that ultimately saw Fisher in the iconic role, Foster acknowledged the differences in age between herself and Fisher at the time. While Fisher was 19 during the auditions, Foster, the Nyad star, was only 13 or 14. Had Foster taken on the role, she humorously speculated about potential alterations to Leia’s famous hairstyle, suggesting she might have opted for a pineapple-inspired look instead of Fisher’s iconic Danish pastry style.
Despite the what-ifs and alternate possibilities, Foster praised the casting choices made for Star Wars, acknowledging the stellar performances of the actors who ultimately secured the roles. She expressed gratitude for the “amazing job” done by the cast while playfully contemplating how her portrayal might have differed.
As these revelations resurface, fans of the Star Wars saga are granted a peek into the casting decisions that shaped the iconic characters, reminding us that the galaxy we love was once filled with auditions, screen tests, and the hopes of actors like Christopher Walken and Jodie Foster to join the epic space opera.
