If you look closely at the final trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, you’ll notice a quick glimpse of Claudia Kim transforming into a snake. Which is a pretty cool trick. But if you were looking closely, you might recognize the snake. For those who are into your Harry Potter history (and if you are watching these movies, you probably are) you’ll remember that Voldemort toward the end went no where without his trusted companion, serpent and Horcrux, Nagini. So for those of you who might have wondered who Claudia would be playing in the Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, the snakes out of the basket as we now know that she will be playing the role of Nagini in new Fantastic Beasts sequel.
In The Crimes of Grindelwald, Claudia Kim’s Nagini is a member of the Circus Arcanus traveling circus. She uses her ability to transform in the snakes to entertain the muggles who come to see her. At this time she is merely a performer, and Kim said she’s is excited to get this opportunity in Fantastic Beasts to explore this side of her character. While talking with Entertainment Weekly, she explained:
“It will be so interesting to see another side of Nagini. You’ve only seen her as a Horcrux. In this, she’s a wonderful and vulnerable woman who wants to live. She wants to stay a human being and I think that’s a wonderful contrast to the character.”
Kim also discusses some of the history of Nagini. She reveals that during the time in which the Fantastic Beasts sequel is set, Nagini has the ability to transform at will from human to serpent. However, she also knows that because of a blood curse, she will inevitably reach the point where she will permanently become the snake, so she see’s it as a race against the clock:
She does feel sometimes it’s not controllable. She is bound to [permanently] transform at some point to a beast so she feels this pressure that the clock is ticking. She has powers that are yet to be explored. I can’t confirm she has powers like wizards have. And she doesn’t have a wand.
As someone who was not aware of Nagini’s history, I am fascinated and looking forward to seeing the Fantastic Beasts sequel. How about you, Harry Potter fans?
