Colin Farrell, known for his gripping portrayal of Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot (The Penguin) in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, recently shared details about his future in the franchise and hinted at what fans can expect from his character in the upcoming sequel. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Farrell confirmed that he’s signed on for three films but wasn’t initially certain he’d appear in The Batman: Part II.
Farrell Opens Up About The Penguin’s Character Development
Farrell reflected on his character’s evolution, noting, “I signed up for three Batman films, but I didn’t know if I’d be in the second film. Matt Reeves is a brilliant writer and an extraordinary filmmaker.” Farrell further explained his anticipation for how The Penguin’s “voice” and personality will continue to develop, emphasizing his character’s psychological depth and changes witnessed during the limited series leading up to The Batman: Part II.
He added, “By the end of the eight episodes, it’s concretized into something else. There is a degree of almost delusional psychopathy present in the last scene. So how is that taken up in the second film? I was told I have five or six scenes.” Farrell’s open-minded approach to the character remains strong as he mentioned, “I’m really an open book, and that’s the way I get excited by things or not.”
Matt Reeves Shares His Vision for Gotham
Matt Reeves, the director of The Batman series, has been instrumental in crafting a grounded yet gripping Gotham universe. According to Reeves, “We’ve shared [the script] as we’ve been going along with DC, and they’re super excited. It’s going to dig into the epic story about deeper corruption and it goes into places [Bruce Wayne] couldn’t even anticipate in the first one.”
Reeves also discussed his approach to reimagining Gotham and its iconic characters, saying, “What was important to me was to find a way to take these pop icons, these mythic characters that everybody knows, and translate it so that Gotham feels like a place in our world. We might push to the edge of fantastical, but we would never go into full fantastical. It’s meant to feel quite grounded.”
The Future of The Batman Franchise
With The Batman: Part II set to release on October 2, 2026, fans can expect to see more of Oz’s journey unfold, bringing a deeper exploration of Gotham’s underworld. Farrell’s three-film commitment suggests that the character’s arc will extend beyond the sequel, allowing Reeves to further build upon the corruption and complexity within Gotham’s darkest corners.
Stay tuned for more updates on The Batman: Part II as Farrell’s Penguin prepares to take on new challenges in Gotham’s ever-evolving landscape.
