Comic Review: Geek Girl #3

Back into the city of Maine with Geek Girl issue #3 and this time, we have a more personal story which felt much more grounded with some cool action littered throughout all of which I feel, and hope is building up to an epic finale involving our returning villains who I want to see much more of.

Plot

Issue #3 Written and created by Sam Johnson with artwork from Carlos Granda, Chunlin Zhao, and Paul Mclaren was a nice change of pace from the 2 previous issues. It starts off action-packed enough, with Geek Girl and Neon Girl, who I’ll get onto later, taking on the robot from the last issue but the fight doesn’t last too long and after a quick visit from our teleporting gang of roughens the fight is all but over. I’m looking forward to hopefully seeing that Robot and finally seeing Geek Girl go toe to toe with those criminals who I’m dying to see more if but for now, we’ll have to wait a little longer. After that, the issue slows right down as we see more of Geek Girls personal life. A night out with her friends like any normal girl which quickly goes south. Without giving too much away we get a nice bit of action later on in the issue but I was surprised to see that wasn’t what stuck. What stuck was the actual person of Geek Girl and how she handled being a kind of media celebrity. Summer isn’t actually Geek Girl so too speak, more of a stand-in for her friend Ruby who is Geek Girl but despite not being the ‘proper’ Geek Girl she is still a true hero. I enoyed the more character driven, the slower moments we got here, as well as the new additions to the world and I’m excited to see how Summer and Ruby progress as they share the mantle of Geek Girl.

Characters

Like I said I really loved the character development given to both Ruby but especially Summer in this issue. The whole idea that you don’t have to have superpowers to be a hero is taken in an interesting angle when Geek Girls glasses are what gives you your powers. Anyone can wear them and so anyone can have her power set so its something more that really makes you a hero. On top of both Geek Girl’s we get some pretty cool new additions to the roster of Geek Girl mainly, Neon Girl and Nina Dante. Neon Girl looked really cool and her introduction as well as her cliffhanger type ending to the issue gets me excited to see more of her but also more heroes in this world. Seeing Geek Girl, Neon Girl, and Bulldog teaming up would be seriously cool and Her character has me excited to see the next issues. Nina Dante was an interesting villain for the issue sporting more technological enhancements than supernatural powers and that was a nice change. Her look was really cool as well and the idea that she may increase her technological abilities really intrigues me. This issue reminded me of the classic weekly superhero shows where every week there was a new villain who always got away to reappear another week. This issue setup and introduced new characters nicely as well as giving already existing ones some nice development as well and now I’m really hoping to see a grand finale with all these colorful characters together.

Artwork

Geek Girl has always had a really bright and vibrant color palette and style which fits the storytelling and characters. This is even truer in issue #3 mainly due to the new additions to the character list and the setting most of the issue takes place in. It basically all goes down in a nightclub and so fits the vibrant style perfectly. This issue is a little low on the action front but with so many different characters and powers being introduced and showcased here I’ excited to see what this comic can do with full-blown action.

Adapted for the Big Screen

Geek Girl has always had the potential to be a cool series for me, rather than a feature-length film and issue #3 proved to me that it would be capable of those more personal character-driven moments rather than Just over the top superhero action. Saying that The new characters added here reminded me that Geek Girl would look seriously cool in Live action.

Overall I did enjoy Geek Girl Issue #3 but ultimately it served more to get me hyped up for the finale of the series when we can finally see all these cool character face off. I appreciated the nice character development we got for Ruby and Summer but the stars of this issue were the new characters we were introduced to and I’m extremely excited to see what direction these characters are taken in.
