Comic Review: Resurrected #2

Welcome back to Resurrected, the sci-fi, cop thriller that throws in some incredibly deep themes for good measure. The second installment is no different with some newer themes coming into the spotlight and a hell of a lot more kickass action to boot. This issue felt a little shorter to me but its most likely down to the breakneck speed this issue moves at, which might be a little jarring to some but if you can keep up with it, it makes for one hell of a thrill ride.

Plot

The second issue of Resurrected is once again written and created by Christian Carnouche, with artwork and coloring by Crizam Zamora, Salvatore Aiala and, Cardinal Rae and picks up after the first issue with Cain and his partner Akimi as they hunt down the mystery assailant from the first issue. I won’t reveal who this assailant is because I wouldn’t want to spoil it here buts it’s a huge bombshell for Cain but one that I saw coming right before the comic revealed it. There’s also another plot point set up with the character of Xander but it’s only really hinted at and I have a feeling it’ll be expanded on in issue #3 and beyond. As for the underlying themes, they’re a little switched up from the first issue. Themes of humanity and death and swapped out for racial divide and identity and I really liked this angle. It creates some interesting divides and tension between certain characters and really gives all the high-intensity action a little more depth to it. The heavy questions make a return but again they’re changed. Who really are we? Where should our loyalties lie? These question really get you thinking and that aspect of Resurrected has always been its strongest point and it’s again fantastic here.

Characters

Similarly to the first issue, Cain and Akimi are the standouts one again. Both are given a little more backstory and there’s is some really intriguing things that are hinted at that I hope we follow up on. Both get to shine with not only emotional one on one character moments but also some incredible action scenes too which I really enoyed and this issue left me wanting more from Akimi surprisingly, I just think her background might be really interesting. Not to say Cain wasn’t great too. Xander was another character who intrigued me more in this issue. He has some deeper issues going on which aren’t really explored here but again im hoping to see a pay off later down the line. A new character is introduced in this issue and whilst we learn very little about him, actions certainly speak louder than words here. He has some of the best action in the whole comic and I can’t wait to see more of him. I have a feeling him and Cain might just end up allies down the line but that’s just me theorizing. Overall issue #2 set up more plot points for future issues than it finished off but for the middle of the first 3 issues that’s absolutely fine and it definitely got me excited for the payoffs in issue #3.

Artwork

The artwork is stellar here as it was in the first issue but here we get a little more action and so the artwork really helps to invigorate and intensify that. The futuristic yet grounded feel is still kept and we get some seriously cool moments both inside and outside of the great fight scenes. This issue’s art has once again got me very excited for future issues because I can already tell that the finale is going to be epic both in its story and its art design.

Adapted for the Big Screen

I’ve said before that I think resurrected would be a pretty great show with a dark and gritty tone and I still stand by that especially after seeing the action in this issue. A mixture of over the top action set-pieces and smaller more personal fights would be fantastic on the silver or small screen but for now, I’m excited enough to see how the action progresses when we get closer to the end.

Overall Resurrected Issue #2 was an action-packed thrill ride that ultimately served to set up the future issues and the finale of the series which was to be expected. Some intriguing character setups were achieved here and the action was a definite step up from the first issue. I’m extremely excited to read through the 3rd issue of Resurrected so expect a review of that up shortly and if you for some reason haven’t read my Review of Issue #1 you can check it out as well as some of my other comic reviews over on my blog.
