It seems that when a film gets announced, sometimes the wheels of progress grind slowly, and sometimes they are on a freight train. When it comes to Paramount’s Coming to America 2, it is on the later. Information has been coming out at a rapid pace lately as the film moves closer to its impending production which is later this year. In this case, MovieHole.Net has released some details about the plot for the Eddie Murphy film.
According to their sources the synopsis goes like this:
Everyone remembers that in the first film Akeem set out to find a wife in America (Queens, NY to be exact) and bring her back to Zamunda. In the sequel, his quest is to bring his American son back to Zumanda. It seems that in order for Akeem to be King, he must have his male heir there to assume his role as Prince. If he is willing to do so.
This will introduce Akeem’s long-lost son LaVelle, who is essentially living the opposite life to his father. LaVelle is permanently ‘trapped’ in Queens. He is basically broke, and he is working at a burger place just to make ends meet. His boss Big Reem, who is a guy that lives at home with his mom, is no McDowell. Finally when LaVelle reaches his 30th birthday, he starts to get a deeper itch to do more with his life.
His opportunity arrives when he discovers he’s heir to the throne of Zamunda. He learns that the father he never knew, Akeem is a prince and will soon become King. Just as you might expect, it’s time to cut to the airplane.
Just as in the original classic, there is of course a girl. This comes in the form of a Zamundan named Mirembe, whose parents have disowned her for becoming a ‘groomer. LaVelle assumes Mirembe would not be accepted by the royals, so as all slow men who don’t recognize a good thing, he initially doesn’t give it a thought. As for LaVelle, he comes to realize that he has to first stop chasing gold and trying to be someone he’s not. That is where Mirembe ends up being the voice of reason and aids him to realize that. Perhaps, she’s his calling… and maybe royalty isn’t.
Another option might be for Akeem to do like his father before him and disregard tradition for his heir. A better match for the throne might be Akeem’s eldest daughter Meeka. Meeka is an intelligent born-leader who distrusts Akeem’s rival, General Izzi. She knows he’s up to no good, but Akeem seems to think otherwise. It will turn out her suggestions for her future ‘King’ father are right on the money.
Paramount’s Coming to America 2 will feature Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, Shari Headley and John Amos reprising their roles as well as possibly Dave Chappelle, who is being rumored to play the role of a Zamundan Shaman.
