CONFIRMED: Emperor Palpatine Returns in “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”

Star Wars fans, it’s happening: the Sith Lord is back!

During the main live show at Star Wars Celebration – which is the ultimate Star Wars fan experience focused on the galaxy far, far away – a brand new teaser trailer for the ninth installment of the Skywalker Saga finally premiered. After two years since Star Wars: The Last Jedi, we finally caught a glimpse of what is to come for the Resistance gang. At the very end of the teaser trailer, however, we heard a familiar but haunting cackle that can only mean one thing: EMPEROR PALPATINE IS MAKING A RETURN.

Ian McDiarmid, the original actor, will be reprising his dark villain role, nearly 40 years since his last appearance in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. At the end of the teaser trailer, McDiarmid made a surprise appearance on stage, where event attendees went completely berserk – an epic way to confirm any speculation. What’s even more epic was how the actor “demanded” to play the trailer for a second time just for the fans to enjoy, declaring in that sinister Sith voice: “Roll it again”. As you can imagine, the crowd went nuts all over again.

How Director JJ Abrams managed to keep this monumental reveal a secret is beyond the fanbase, especially considering how we are living in an age of social media where avoiding spoilers for major movies is no small feat for the dedicated moviegoer. Though this is an important piece to the puzzle, we are still not given any clues as to why Emperor Palpatine is returning. Looks like we are going to have to wait some more before we can find out what the future holds in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, coming to theaters in late December.
