Dan Stevens, known for his roles in Downton Abbey and Legion, has been cast in the lead role of the upcoming RoboCop television series at Amazon Prime Video.

The eight-episode series received its official green light in July 2026. The project has been in development since Amazon’s acquisition of MGM in 2022, as the streamer continues to draw from the studio’s extensive intellectual property library for new film and television projects.

According to the official logline, “A giant tech conglomerate convinces the city to place a powerful robot on its police force – a robot implanted with the consciousness of a beloved, fallen officer (Stevens).”

Stevens first gained widespread recognition for his performance in the British period drama Downton Abbey. He later earned critical acclaim for his starring turn in the FX series Legion. His other television credits include Solar Opposites, Zero Day, and the forthcoming third season of AMC’s The Terror. He is also set to appear as a series regular in the second season of Dexter: Resurrection. On the big screen, Stevens recently appeared in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and is known for roles in the live-action Beauty and the Beast, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, and Cuckoo.

Peter Ocko will write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner for the series. James Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett executive produce through Blumhouse Atomic Monster. Michael Miner and Ed Neumeier, co-creators and co-writers of the original 1987 RoboCop film, will also executive produce. Danielle Bozzone of Blumhouse Atomic Monster will co-executive produce and oversee the project for the company. Amazon MGM Studios is producing.

The RoboCop franchise began in 1987 with the Paul Verhoeven-directed film starring Peter Weller as the half-man, half-machine law enforcement officer. Weller returned for the 1990 sequel, while Robert Burke took over the role in RoboCop 3 in 1993. Nancy Allen appeared as Officer Anne Lewis across all three original films. A 2014 reboot starred Joel Kinnaman. The property has also inspired multiple television series, including two animated and two live-action shows, along with video games and comic books.

No premiere date has been announced for the new series.
