‘Daredevil’ Actors Talk About the Influence The Punisher has on Season Three

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/3ivNUxf1P-g” el_width=”80″ align=”center”][vc_column_text]For any fan of Daredevil and The Punisher, it’s obvious to see from the trailers for Daredevil season three that there is major influence from the other character. If we can refer back to the second season of Daredevil, we remember how much at odds the two were in the beginning. Their bickering ovr right and wrong and their views couldn’t be any different, but as the series went on, we can see Matt Murdock even admitting to Frank Castle that his method is not working and that they may have to revert to Castle’s, “just this once”. To which Frank responds “you cross over to my side of the line and there’s no going back.” Considering in the new Daredevil trailer, Murdock expresses that eil needs to be expunged and that it’s time to “let the Devil out”, maybe he is seeing things more in The Punisher’s light.

In a sit-down with Screen Rant, both Charlie Cox and Deborah Ann Woll reflected on the themes that tie Daredevil and The Punisher together, particularly Cox stated:

“With this particular show it’s always been – I mean, Steven DeKnight, the showrunner of season 1 said before they had any idea that Frank Castle would come into season 2 and have his own show, Steven would talk about this is a Daredevil that’s one bad day away from being Frank Castle. And that’s something I’ve always run with, I’ve always enjoyed playing that aspect of him.”

At the end of The Defenders, Matt loses the love of his life, Elektra, which could be the driving point for his character to want to take a darker approach to his battles, especially against big bads like Wilson Fisk and Bullseye. Sparing lives may not be the way to approach these villains, who we know will take any step necessary to achieve their goal. Especially a new and even more polished Kingpin, fresh from prison, who will stop at nothing to take down those who put him in there in the first place. And, considering fans of the comics will know what Bullseye does to Karen Page, Matt may have to cross the line.

Speaking about Karen Page, we saw in the second season of Daredevil, Karen develops a friendship with Frank Castle that’s even more prominent in the first season of The Punisher. Deborah Ann Woll reflects how her time on the other show will influence Karen coming into Daredevil season three:

“One of my favorite themes from that Punisher season and it’s that particularly one scene out by the water where I have to ask him like “Where does this end? At what point is your revenge over? At what point do you feel better after killing hundreds of people?” And of course the answer is never. I liked the idea that that’s a realization for me, too, an understanding that I have to find. I think in a way it made me more sensitive to the consequences of extreme action and some of that theme gets picked up between Karen and Matt once we realize he’s still around.

Karen does still have her gun. That’s an interesting thing and that’s definitely something we want to be very careful that we don’t inadvertently make some big commercial for guns and things like that, but I enjoy, especially as a female in this series, being able to have that conversation. I thought Punisher started starting to move in some of those conversations and we definitely have some ideas this year about the gun not representing safety, that Karen and anyone can be attacked whether she’s carrying or not, she can save herself whether she’s carrying or not. The gun is not the difference in that situation.”

There’s not been any announcement that Karen will be returning to The Punisher season two and as much as I want to freak out and fear the worst about what will happen to her in Daredevil season three, I also must remind people that The Punisher likes to remain mysterious – even their release date for the first season had been held out for a long time. So, fingers crossed that everything is alright!
