[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”9001″ img_size=”800×400″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]The legendary hallway fight scene that has now been featured in every Netflix Marvel show originated in Daredevil’s first season, with Charlie Cox executing a breathless scene that cinema buffs have been praising for years. Who knew that anything could ever come close to that original fight, but for those who have seen Daredevil season three, we can say that those behind the show outdid themselves. A bold move indeed, the third season featured a 10-minute take in its fourth episode that did not feature any cuts.
Erik Oleson, Daredevil’s showrunner; did mention that he and his crew had built in ways to cover the cuts, should the scene not work the way it did in rehearsals. But, it was insane, featuring several plot points, mayhem on all sides, and Matt Murdock at his best.
“It was insane what Charlie and the stunt double and the stunts team and the guest director pulled off,” Oleson said. “I’m glad that we were able to do the whole version of the hallway fight.” He also called it something both he and Cox hold up as “proud experiences of our careers.”
Cox has pulled off some amazing fight scenes throughout the years during his time as Matt Murdock, but the actor admits to feeling skeptic over the venture when he first read it on script:
“I felt like it was gonna be too much of ask,” he said. “So it’s an amazing testament to all of us, the stunt team particularly, that we were able to pull it off.”
Just like in the original fight scene in season one, where Murdock displayed realistic fatigue during the brawl; one of the most noticeable aspects about this long fight scene was that the lawyer/vigilante was not ready. Going there simply to get information surrounding Wilson Fisk’s release from prison, he is attacked and sent through this whirlwind of trying to fight his way out to safety, all while battling against prisoners who are trying to kill him.
“You can’t plan anything. You can’t plan how you’re going to take someone down, really,” he said. “You have to just prepare yourself to be as quick and as powerful as you can be. The great thing about doing a one-take scene is you don’t have to act tired.”
But, Matt was tired. After climbing his way through the prison, where not only people are trying to kill him, but the prisoners are literally killing each other. At the end of it, Matt gets into the cab he paid to wait for him and in exhaustion, slumps down and asks for him to take him home. I can’t imagine the physical exertion that that must have been for Cox, but it was probably some of the best TV we’ve seen in the Marvel Netflix universe and a scene that must be re-watched over and over again.
Though an exhausting experience, Cox admits:
“It’s kind of like the worst case scenario for Matt Murdock,” he explained. “I also was just stoked to see him fight as Matt Murdock. I totally geeked out on that.”
