David Ayer Gives an Update on Gotham City Sirens, Bright 2, and The Dirty Dozen

Sometimes, I truly think people forget how good of a director David Ayer is. While I didn’t enjoy Bright, Ayer’s projects have always been good ones in my eyes. Despite fans not liking Ayer’s Suicide Squad, it is spawning off other films such as Margot Robbie’s Birds of Prey and James Gunn’s the Suicide Squad. Supposedly, Ayer was going to work on a Gotham City Sirens, but there hasn’t been any word on that. Until a panel for the Fox Drama ‘Deputy’, where Ayer was asked about a few of his projects.

Update on Gotham City Sirens

Even though Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad were greenlit (and one of them is coming out this year), Gotham City Sirens seems to be on hold:

“No, I think it’s on pause.”

While I enjoyed Ayer’s Suicide Squad, not everyone did. While it seems like there’s more confidence in Gunn to make The Suicide Squad work, it isn’t surprising that Warner Bros. may want to wait to see how Birds of Prey does before greenlighting Gotham City Sirens. The trailers and promotion for Birds of Prey has fans divided, so it will be the box office numbers and reviews that determine how Gotham City Sirens will (or if it will) move forward.

Ayer Turned Down Doing the Sequel to ‘Suicide Squad’

As we mentioned, Gunn is directing the second Suicide Squad movie, even though both Gunn and Ayer have expressed that it’s not a sequel. Still, a second movie was greenlit by the studio and we wonder if Ayer was ever considered to be the director, or if it directly went to another director. Ayer explained:

“I had a chance to do it, but I went another way.”

He did say that he’s not done with comic book movies:

“I love the world creation of it and I love the power of the IP and the fans,” Ayer said. “It’s dangerous. It’s like juggling chainsaws, but I am drawn to it and it’s definitely an arena I’ll play in again.”

Bright 2 Is Happening and Here’s What It Will Entail

One sequel that Ayer is involved in is Bright 2. Ayer confirmed that it’s still in the works:

“Still in development. We’re working on it so hopefully we’ll be able to mount that up soon.”

Ayer expressed that the sequel would explore the world-building components that the first one could have, but didn’t:

“It’s a great opportunity for all of us to explore the world more. I think people felt like there was a lot of doorways to explore. People were like, ‘Tell us about the dragon. Tell us about this, the history.’ So it’s a very rich world and I think we’re going to drill down some more.”

The Dirty Dozen

Finally, Ayer confirmed that he is working on a script for The Dirty Dozen, which has the potential of being greenlit:

“I’m working on a script right now,” Ayer said. “So pending a great story that the studio likes, it’s on.”

Which of Ayer’s upcoming projects excite you the most and do you hope for a Gotham City Sirens film?
