If there’s one thing the internet loves doing, it’s sh*tting on someone else because it’s ‘popular’. Especially when someone better seemingly comes around. What do I mean by this? James Gunn is helming The Suicide Squad, a movie I’m extremely excited for. David Ayer was behind 2016’s Suicide Squad, a movie that I think is a lot better than it gets credit for. A lot of fans either like diminishing Ayer’s contribution to this DC world or they enjoy pinning Gunn and Ayers against each other. The truth is, they are both filmmakers and according to a recent tweet, Ayer supports Gunn’s venture.
First, Ayer confirmed that The Suicide Squad is not a direct sequel to his 2016 film; check it out:
It’s not a sequel it’s a reinvention and @JamesGunn is going to absolutely knock it out of the park. I’m cheering every step a way. https://t.co/MehKt7rvLO

Yes that is correct – some characters and elements will be used but @JamesGunn is reinventing the universe. Everybody recognizes the immense potential of the franchise. https://t.co/iiWSKPI17P

Jai Courtney also spoke about the differences between the two Suicide Squad films:
“It’s going to be different, for sure, but I think everyone’s welcoming that challenge and welcoming the new energy in,” Courtney recently told ComicBook.com. “I loved [Suicide Squad director] David [Ayer], I loved working with David, I’d work with David again in a heartbeat. But Gunn, too, is quite prolific and really, obviously, does know what he’s doing. I’m excited to see what he brings to it. It’s going to be tonally different but very cool as well. The world has evolved from where we were at at that point; he’s going to have his own take on it, and it’s going to be great.”
The Suicide Squad will hit theaters on August 6, 2021.
