David Harbour Teases His and Scarlett Johansson’s Character’s Pasts in Black Widow: “[They’ve] Known Each Other for a Really Long Time”

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”26853″ img_size=”798×420″ alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]San Diego Comic-Con brought Scarlett Johansson and other Black Widow cast members to the stage during Marvel’s massive Hall H panel. The solo movie was teased to take place after the events of Captain America: Civil War. Natasha Romanoff sacrificed herself in Avengers: Endgame so the Avengers could gain the Soul Stone. But, there’s a lot about this character that we don’t know about. She’s been in the MCU since Iron Man 2 and there have been hints here and there of her past, but nothing truly developed.

Black Widow is a former SHIELD and KGB agent and there’s a lot of ties to her KGB past that have not been explored yet. One of the relationships that will seemingly be explored is the one between Natasha Romanoff and David Harbour’s Alexei aka Red Guardian. Now, I have admittedly been a “shipper” of Steve Rogers and Natasha since Avengers 2012. And in the comics, she has a brief history with Bucky’s Winter Soldier. But, in the comics as well, Red Guardian is an ex-husband of hers. Considering we’ve never seen this or even heard of it in her time with the Avengers, it will be interesting how they play this.

Harbour teased after the panel:

“It’s great because you get to go back a little bit in time with her, right? And you get to explore these events and that’s one of the things that was interesting to me in the movie was because you know the events of Endgame so you get to explore how she got there and how she got there to make that choice.”

He added:

“I think that’s the interesting part of her narrative is that we get to go back and explore this period of time between the events of Civil War and that particular arc. One of our things is we’ve known each other for a really long time and that relationship plays into the stuff that’s come beyond. The great thing about knowing the end of an arc, you get to go back and either foreshadow or play against it and it’s very joyful for fans to see these moments or prepped character beats come in at times.”

What do you think of Harbour playing the “Russian version of Captain America”?
