One Youtuber, Mr. H Reviews; was able to speak with an attendant, who voiced positive reviews for the David Harbour Hellboy film.
According to this audience member, Hellboy is violent, deserving of the R-rating it received, and stays true to the characters’ comic book origins. Milla Jovovich has been described as a “cliché”, but the fan says Harbour’s performance was great, and American Gods’ Ian McShane was a standout in the movie. The fans then added that the movie did not take itself too seriously, which created a fun time for the audience.
Mike Mignola, who created Hellboy; was one of the screenwriters on this project, who was asked why there was a decision to reboot and recast Ron Perlman. Mignola explained how this was not a decision that was made lightly:
“We went back and forth on that,” Mignola said. “Early on there was some idea of continuing the storyline that del Toro had started but would that be fair to a new director? So we decided to just start over. Neil is a horror director, so the idea then was to make a darker film. If you are going to use a guy, let him do what he does best. So we went through the script taking out the del Toro-isms and in some ways go out of our way to make sure we are doing a different Hellboy with its own distinct character [as a project] but still adhering to the comics.”
Hellboy will come out April 12, 2019.
