When Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker came out, some people pondered whether or not a mysterious villain like him should get an origin story. Well, Todd Phillip’s film was not the first one to think about doing this. According to Screen Rant, Warner Bros. had initially wanted Heath Ledger’s Joker to have an origin story in Christopher Bolan’s The Dark Knight.
The Dark Knight co-writer David S. Goyer revealed during Comic-Con@Home that the studio really wanted an origin story for the Joker:
“I do remember when we were talking about, ‘Well, what if the Joker doesn’t really have an origin story? Even after the success of Batman Begins, that was considered a very controversial thing, and we got a lot of push-back. People were worried.”
Personally, I’m happy we didn’t get an origin story for Ledger’s Joker. While The Joker, starring Phoenix; was a masterpiece on its own, Ledger’s Joker was shrouded in secrecy. And that made him all the more frightening. The fact that we didn’t know what version of his scar-story was real. Who he was? Where he came from? Not knowing was the best part.
What do you think?
